- James OCork, Ireland1,090 contributionsWe visited mid-morning to avoid the tour crowds, and I would suggest the earlier the better, so as to experience the displays with the level of solitude it requires.
I was astounded by the number of people who wouldn't pay a paltry fee for the self guided audio headset as it added so much clarity to the experience.
It was shocking to see how a supposedly civilised country such as France treated their fellow humans, but then again, how many empires behaved in such a manor ? and how many countries still are today ?
The displays were well laid out and numbered for ease of understanding with the audio headset.
I realise that this is Vietnam's story to tell, however, I thought it was a little cheapened by the constant maintenance of the party line through the French area when human emotion must have been to the fore of the poor Vietnamese, and the assertion that, in general, the American POWs were treated with such gentleness and compassion during that conflict. Obviously, the pictures and displays are authentic, however, I imagine selective portrayal was extensively used.
I thought the narrative was weigted unnecessarily heavily in one direction, as what I assume would be a more accurate portrayal, would certainly be understandable to most people today.
For me, both the story and site were lessened a little by such.
I'm glad I went and would recommend a visit to anyone visiting Ha Noi.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I noticed a few people openly sobbing ??? Whilst its eye opening for sure, I certainly didn't achieve such emotion.Written 6 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a vast site situated in central Hanoi. There is a small charge that can only be paid by cash. The temple is a series of courtyards each with pavilions, halls and statues. There is plenty of information on the history of the university, how the exam system worked and the monarch's role in assessing student. There is a small cafe near to one of the courtyards.Written 17 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LouiseAustralia167 contributionsIf the experience didn’t feel like I was in North Korea this would be a 5 star attraction! If you’re in Hanoi this is a must but BE PREPARED! We have been to many religious sites and know about dressing modestly etc, my male partner was caught out for wearing shorts, we went across the road and got a pair of pants for about $5 AUD, no worries. We then got into the line with every other person local and tourists, to be screened by security more than the airports! Don’t bring any bottles of water or any big cameras, they will all be taken, cameras will be stored - to top it all off we get inside after the escapade of security and pants and see other people inside IN SHORTS!! As we go through the area we are marched in 2 straight lines for 40minutes! And might I mention no phones, photos or cameras - that’s fine totally respect it but honestly it was over the top and a double standard, tourists were being targeted and further only tourists have to pay. A small fee I know, but the negative attitude toward tourists put a slight damper on the whole thing!
Nevertheless seeing the preserved body was amazing and such a feat, the communist influence throughout was very interesting to see and it was awesome to stand where many great political leaders have stood before!
Would totally recommend but be prepared!Written 4 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Arrived round 9.00 am . As o hired a driver not a guide I took myself off to explore. There is an entry fee of 20 thousand Dong , you get a map.
How hard can this be!
I wandered round for a few hours discovering some interesting places and had a delicious custard apple smoothie.
In reality it would have been better to have a guided tour. I’m sure I missed highlights my map reading isn’t great.
There is a buggy takes people about the highlights of the village . Worth considering
I had lunch there as well not enjoyable either .
However I’m pleased with the overall experienceWritten 17 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LolaGo1Washington DC, DC6,620 contributionsAs we walked around the HCM complex, it appeared that the major attraction is the HCm Mausoleum. This attraction is one of the several attractions located in the vicinity. My guide pointed it to me and learned that it is not open to the public.
Since there are other open attractions to visit in the area such as the Museum, Pagoda, the wide open space, etc. we proceeded to visit them.Written 16 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Had a Grab taxi drop me off (and later pick me up) at a Pho restaurant on the main street (83 Đ. Hoàng Hoa Thám, Ngọc Hồ, Ba Đình, Hà Nội, Vietnam) then walked down a short lane to reach the wreckage in the lake.
Visited on a quiet Monday morning around 8am as the city was just waking up. Grabbed an egg and cheese crepe from a vendor outside the hospital (next to the lake). Spent about an hour walking around the lake, taking photos, watching locals gather their groceries from the morning market by the lake. This was one of the more emotionally stirring spots on my trip to Vietnam...Written 5 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Peaceful pond area but only need a few minutes to climb the steps and walk past the actual home. The museum closes mid-day so make sure to time your entrance. Upon entering the complex, including the museum, proper attire is needed.Written 30 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
