- Alain LMalaga, Spain109 contributionsGreat experience, great staff, great memories!!! It take you a few minutes to feel balance and understand or to move... and hop, flying around :-)Written 1 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sam CPattaya, Thailand5 contributionsHaving spent many years in the diving in a variety of places, I always come back to Mermaids for a variety of reasons. Firstly I know the people. They know the dive sites. They are extremely safety conscious. This is of primary importance.
Secondly they have reliable transportation on and off the water.
Thirdly the people I've met are from all walks of life at Mermaids--Switzerland, Britain, USA, Thailand, Japan, Korea, China...It is a wonderful place to make new friends and contacts.
Finally there is an opportunity to socialize informally every-so-often at cookouts.
Mermaids is among my best memories in life as I'm sure it will be yours!Written 12 June 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. However the boat situation is temporary and we believe the course is still an excellent option for aspiring sailors. Also note that for our round of classes, Tim led the class alone which turns out to be a blessing as he is a great instructor with tons of experience to share! Glad to be taught directly by Captain Tim.
This course is designed to teach you what you need to know to skipper a boat (with a focus on liveaboard cruising), so besides the rules of the road which are heavily emphasised and should be, there is a good level of detail into the realistic experience and mechanics of the boat, such as what could go wrong and how to fix things when they go wrong. Lesson materials, manuals, and tests/exams are well and extensively written and provided in hard copy to students. Though not everything in the notes is covered verbally in class, reading these should supplement your learning well. In terms of hands-on experience, we did have ample opportunities to perform different roles on the boat when setting off, returning, docking, trimming, steering, etc. There wasn't an emphasis on racing and going for maximum speed, if that was what you're looking for, but I'm sure if you ask you'll be able to learn something. Tim is also a great storyteller and I found his stories and anecdotes fun to listen to. Chilled water was provided which was a nice touch.
Nonetheless, there were definitely some areas for improvement with regards to punctuality and sometimes the lack of training yachts which is a temporary situation as explained by Tim, hence the missing "star". Still, the design of the lesson materials and the class, together with Tim's experience and sharing of information, makes this an excellent choice. Glad to have done the course with SailQuest under Tim!Written 2 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Strait to Jomptien Beach where boat was ready to go.
We drove about 45 minutes out behind last islands what you can see.
Catch some live baits.
At morning tide was very fast but when tide slows down fish started to bite.
Barracuda, snappers, Queenfish, lots of small fishes and a great over 10 kg King Mackerel !
Boat was best what I have seen in Pattaya.
Rods, reels and hooks were high quality.
Captain and deck hand knew what they do.
Did not speak a lot but how they handle the rods told me all.
I will go again.Written 8 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were not sure if shops are re-opened at full capacity, after the pandemic. We were pleased to receive Amarawatersports' replies and their helpful information, promptly.
Location: Na Jomtien beach. Our hotel is within walking distance, south of Amara's. Note that there is a canal one has to cross. Depend on the tides, it can be as deep as waist high.
Restaurants, a Kiteboarding shop in the area. Good shades on the beach.
Lessons: Taught by 2 great instructors, Robert and Keo, teaching windsurfing and wingfoiling. The instructors are friendly and pro --apparently had won many competitions.
We took windsurfing lesson daily and glad we made progression. Glad to be able to windsurf on higher wind.
We were pleased to have met/chatted with Ms Amara Wichithong, former windsurfing olympian for Thailand.
We did not try Wing foiling at the time. Looked pretty cool though.
Wind: Quite windy during our stay there. Beginners should consider taking lesson at the early hour around, 9/10am. After 11ish, wind gets quite high, not so great for beginners but perfect for advanced windsurfers/kite-boarders/wing foliers.
Lesson price: very reasonable with variety of sizes (sails and boards). They also have SUP/catamarn for rental/lessons.Written 12 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
