Not interested in silk production and trade I was hesitating if to visit this museum at all. But, on our 4th day in Bangkok having nothing else to do as we've visited all other attractions we came here, as I was curious why is so highly ranked.
The house, better say complex of them, as Mr. Thompson bought several is situated by a canal in a picturesque and green environment.
Entry fee is 200 Baht (6$) and you can only visit with a guided tour (in 4 languages). Be prepared for waiting - you cannot buy tickets online which is quite odd, but only on the spot. When we arrived around 11.30AM there was a huge line and we got our spot at 1PM tour. So, consider coming earlier, buy tickets for suitable time and go somewhere else in order not to wait there.
For me, most fascinating was Mr. Thompson's life story. He was born in a wealthy family - his father being a successful textile merchant with strong political connections in US government and mother raising several charity funds.
However, he studied and became an architect (the whole complex you see and visit was made by himself). He joined the army, serving in several parts of the world, when he fall in love with Thailand, and after that he worked in US secret service. Finally he gave up from everything of that, resigned and came back to Thailand to start the silk business, rest is history.
Like everything else he did, it became a huge success. His creations were globally recognized and popular. Customers included European and Asian royalty, Hollywood movie stars,...etc.
At the end of the tour is a shop, however don't expect Thai bargains but rather 5 Av. prices.

Very useful and recommended visit to this huge museum on Thai history starting approx 5,000 years ago - and with help from 2 very knowledgeable ladies we had a great tour in English which lasted well over 2 hours!

English tours are certainly available on Wednesday, from 09:30and they are free of charge as run by volunteers; entrance however was THB200 but was money well spent.

After all the walking, up and down stairs and between builduings there us a small family run Thai restaurant, extremely affordable and with good food (recommended their Pad Thai)

    Enjoy!

Excellent place to visit. Science activities and experiments were fun and interesting. Everything was explained in lots of detail. The show at the end of the visit was also interesting and filled with science. I would say WOW park is an excellent and interesting place to visit.

This is amazing, the information on the tsunami was very interesting.
Its graphic and not for children but if medical background will find reallly good.
I left hubby out front. Was dissapoinyed a lot of pieces were in loan to another museum.
Seeing road accident victims was totally different toseeing them in hospital.
I found it fascinating and imformative but others are grossed out.
Didnt feel right to take photos and some places reuesting not too.

I enjoyed taking pictures with some wax statues of past and present celebrity figures. The gallery was easy to locate and I had a nice welcome there. The visit went on smoothly. However, new celebrity figures would be probably the most welcome.

Suan Pakkad or cabbage garden used to be the house of the grandson of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) but is now a museum. There are 8 rooms connected into a spacious house. In the rooms many artefacts from different countries and periods, not only Thai. Pottery, jewellery, carvings, musical instruments etc. Not a typical tourist place, so quiet. If you want to enjoy something different I could recommend to spend around 2 hours here. Photography inside is not allowed and entrance fee is 100 baht.

This museum was left to Bangkok by a previous owner who felt that it would tell the story of a family and how they lived through a period of great change in Bangkok. We found it fascinating as we could see the influence of England, India and Thailand in different objects. There are some fans but no air conditioning, so dress appropriately and take plenty of water.

Just steps away from the steel and glass retail of Terminal 21 at the Asok BTS stop is this “northern Thai ethnological museum “. It is an exposition of the motivating beliefs, ideologies and practice of the Lanna lifestyle in northern Thailand through the exhibits in this original 19th century northern Thailand home. There are adequate signs in English and subtitled videos. You can read every sign and watch every video in about an hour. Opens at 9 am Tue - Sunday. Admission was 100 Bhat or about 3$.

The house is in a wonderful park setting in central Bangkok. You can just walk around the park which has a number of really nice restaurants and take a personalised tour of the house which we did, it lasts about 50 minutes. The tour of the house was well worth it. The is a beautiful building constructed througout in teak, you get to find out the background as to whom built it and why and also learn about where the very large collection.of artefacts came from. The guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand.

Lovely little museum on the grounds of the Royal Palace. It is aggressively air conditioned, which is a nice reprieve after touring the grounds. You are not allowed to take photos inside, but the displays are spectacular and we learned a lot about Queen Sirkit as well.

If out want to know a bit more about the history of this older part of the town an stroll through this neat museum will give you some more insight. Entrance costs only 30 baht. There is a part about minting, with information about the production and circulation of the coins. There are displays on the development of this city section and the coming and going of the local crafts. Most of the displays have English explanations. Time needed is 1 – 2 hours.
