The Buddha Dordenman. Interestingly, the statue itself is the home for over 100,000 smaller statues of Buddha, made from bronze and gold.

The Thimphu Chorten is a nice place to visit that is located near Thimphu city center. When we had arrived, there was a nice size crowd already here - turning the prayer wheels, walking around the Stupa and paying tribute.

- UgyenNoida, India286 contributionsThis place is must visit for me at least once in a year to make offering and seek blessings from the local local deity as I was born in and brought up in Thimphu. Almost all kids who are born in Thimphu and was brought here after 3 days of birth by their parents have to do the same. Am Sure everyone will understand why is it so?
But for Tourist if your are spiritual and is seeking blessings can always visit.
Dont forget to carry your Kabney and Rachu if your are bhutanese. I have read that the words "Zorig Chusum" literally means "Thirteen Crafts." The thirteen Bhutan art forms are: Traditional Painting, Sculpturing, Wood Carving, Calligraphy, Paper making, Bronze Casting, Embroidery, Weaving, Carpentry, Masonry, Bamboo and cane weaving, Gold/Silver Smithy, Black smithy.
The Institute has various classrooms with instructors who teach students these 13 art forms. After the students are taught these various art forms, they are then tested to determine their knowledge of these art forms. When our small group tour was visiting the Institute, there were several classrooms that were "Closed for Testing" with a sign on the door(s) indicating that testing was in progress. The items or goods that are made in the classrooms are being sold at the Institute's gift shop or "Showroom", and at various gift shops throughout Thimphu city.

- AZCasualTravelerMesa, AZ1,831 contributionsThe National Folk Heritage Museum is located only a few minutes from Thimphu city center. This "Museum" is not your typical one (a building housing artifacts from the past). I would call this Museum a "Living History Museum", which is defined as a Museum that actually recreates historical settings of past time periods - the conditions, culture and natural environment of the past. In the case of the National Folk Heritage Museum, the Museum building itself is more than 150 years old residence and the surrounding area is a very good simulation of what life was like during that time period.
The entrance to the "Museum" or old historic home opens into a courtyard where fire wood, farming equipment and grain is stored. This courtyard also contains a stone oven for burning incense and wooden mortars for pounding rice. The Museum second floor level was used mainly for storage of grain and food items. The Museum (top) third floor level was the living, dining and sleeping areas.
