- AZCasualTravelerMesa, AZ1,831 contributionsThe National Folk Heritage Museum is located only a few minutes from Thimphu city center. This "Museum" is not your typical one (a building housing artifacts from the past). I would call this Museum a "Living History Museum", which is defined as a Museum that actually recreates historical settings of past time periods - the conditions, culture and natural environment of the past. In the case of the National Folk Heritage Museum, the Museum building itself is more than 150 years old residence and the surrounding area is a very good simulation of what life was like during that time period.
The entrance to the "Museum" or old historic home opens into a courtyard where fire wood, farming equipment and grain is stored. This courtyard also contains a stone oven for burning incense and wooden mortars for pounding rice. The Museum second floor level was used mainly for storage of grain and food items. The Museum (top) third floor level was the living, dining and sleeping areas.
Interesting to visit an actual 150 year old residence that has now been restored to become the "National Folk Heritage Museum", which the Bhutan government is wanting to preserve the old Bhutanese heritage and rural life from the past.Written 15 May 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Balasubramanian RChennai (Madras), India535 contributionsBhutan Postal museum is situated in centre of Thimphu city and it is tourist attraction.
