- Julian DYork, UK20 contributionsFirst of all, amazing day out. Very worthwhile. But, couldn't really find much info about this so I'll lay it out here.
Rent a car. It costs $40 per day in Bulawayo and then just drive in. Then, the cost for park entry is $15 per person, plus $5 for the car. Then we paid $20 per person on top of that for rhino tracking.
It's self drive and you'll see some cool stuff, such as zebras, monkeys, impala, warthog. There are some beautiful rock formations that you can climb on! There are also lizards galore if you are into that.
Then you go to the rhino lodge (whenever you want really). Make sure that you download the map of Matobo on google maps on your phone beforehand, and have the ranger at the entrance mark the rhino person on the map as it was quite hard to find.
We saw the rhinos - you take the ranger with you in the car - and you get out and walk up to them (6m distance). It was emotional to be so close to them.Written 12 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Nestled in a beautiful conservancy, the lodge offers fantastic game viewing with close encounters with elephants and rhinos. We saw four of the Big Five, and feeding the animals was a highlight.
The hospitality was warm and welcoming, with excellent home-cooked meals. The three-course dinner, paired with sundowners at the lookout, was a perfect way to end the day. The accommodations were comfortable, and the staff, led by Kate Travers and Chris Carless, were outstanding.
Whether for a day trip or overnight stay, Imire Lodge offers a memorable, authentic safari experience that we highly recommend.Written 14 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Picture it: immense walls of stone, some as high as 36 feet, curving gracefully without a single drop of mortar holding them together. This is the signature of the Great Enclosure, a structure so massive and expertly crafted that it remains one of the largest stone structures in sub-Saharan Africa. Then, perched high on a hill, is the Hill Complex—a place believed to have been the seat of kings, where royalty and priests looked out over their land, watching over their people and the plains below.
Great Zimbabwe was not just a city; it was a crossroads, a beacon of trade, and a symbol of connection between worlds. Traders brought porcelain from China, glass beads from Persia, and other exotic goods, traveling great distances to this city of stone.
But beyond the trade and the wealth, there is something deeply spiritual about these ruins, something in the very stones themselves. The name “Zimbabwe” comes from the Shona words Dzimba dza Mabwe, meaning “houses of stone,” a fitting title for this place where culture, spirit, and ingenuity were literally carved into the landscape. Today, these structures inspire Zimbabwe’s national identity, appearing on flags, currency, and as symbols of African pride and heritage.
The local guide (forgot his name but he is there on my pictures uploaded ) 🥹 brought these stories to life, recounting tales of ancient royalty and cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations.Written 13 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our Sundowner Experience started with a flawless booking process through Sylvia and Ceri at Rhino Rendezvous. I cannot thank them enough for their guidance and knowledge and this could not have been possible without them. Through them, we booked transfer from Harare for our group of 11 on a bus charter from Hersov Tours. Abel drove us safely and took us to all our mini tour destinations on land without hassle.
Houseboat Sundowner itself was the main event. It is a mixture of ruggedness, charm, and luxury. The Sundowner was made even more special by the crew of Lovemore the Skipper, Joe the Cook, and James the deck hand. Together, these three gave us a memorable trip that will endure in memory for a lifetime.
Lovemore knows the lake like the back of his hand. He navigates without a compass, and is deeply knowledgeable about the channels, expertly rounding the dead trees. He took our group of novice fishers and turned them into confident ones. He also has a contagious smile and laugh.
Joe fed us with a wonderful assemblage of delicious treats and meals, and we were delighted to try his own signature hot sauce. He was often hard at work in the kitchen while we were having fun, and this could not have been easy in the Kariba heat!
James was also an amazing deck hand. He cleaned with an efficiency that is unique and made sure that our living area on the top deck and our cabins were always spick and span.
We had the two pontoon tender boats to go fishing and game viewing. We encountered more hippos than you can imagine, crocodiles, elephants, including some huge tuskers, antelope, waterbuck, and lots of colourful birds such as cormorants, darters, pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, yellow-billed storks, and plenty more.
Above all, we saw the most remarkable sunrises and sunsets on the lake, and wow, did these impress! We were up each morning to catch the sunrise, and without fail, stopped to gaze at another sunset.
Sundowner was a really special privilege to experience.Written 12 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
