This gate is situated after Bab Debbagh. It was built in 1126 AD. It is one of the original Almoravid entrances. It is named after the Berber guards from the Banu Aylen Tribe who used to be posted here. This is a historical gate. A battle took place here in 1129 AD. The city was stormed by the Almohad army, they besieged the city. When they tried to enter from this gate they were stopped, from invading Marrakech, by the brave Berber guards. It is a simple ochre coloured gate near Oued Issil. It is located next to the Qadi Ayyaz Mosque.

Bab Taghzout is a strange gate. Although it is one off the 12 original Almoravid gates but it is not connected to the ramparts. There is a very interesting reason why this gate stands in the centre of the Medina. It is because the shrine of the twelfth-century Sufi saint Sidi Bel Abbes lies close to it. During the 17th century sultan Moulay Ismail built a pilgrimage path around the tombs of the seven holy men of Marrakech. After this the area grew into a thickly populated residential neighbourhood, so much so that the city wall was extended to encompass it. It is a beautiful gate with a wooden awning. The wall perished but the gate still stands as an oddity.

All I can say is be very careful in this area, you will be constantly hassled, especially at the Tanneries. Be prepared to say a very abrupt NON!
