What a crazy place! So easy to get turned around! But what colour, what excitement, what hustle and bustle. Lots to see and shopping is easy if you wish, but I kept my wallet well hidden. Can't believe the crowds and the motorcycles driving through the people. Strange to a Canadian but an absolute must visit place.

I appreciate how nicely reconstructed the building is. You will learn about how much work it was from a video played on a screen in one of the exposition rooms.
An entrance ticket to this museum is also not as expensive as at some other museums/touristic places in Marrakesh.

Nice distinctive tower, stands out amongst the low lying buildings of Marrakech. Such a shame non Muslims cannot enter the mosque & climb the tower.

Large ruin that makes for some good photo opportunities. Some historical artifacts are also available to view. The nesting Storks on the towers will also vie for your attention!

We paid 350 dhm for our family of four - 100dhm for foreigner adults and 50dhm for kids under 13. We decided to pay 100 dhm for a guide to explain the history which made the trip worth our while because he explained more about the architecture and the excavation that took place in 1917. If we didn’t hire him then it would have been boring.

There are three areas for the burial of the royal family and the most important section is where the sultan is buried and where you have to queue to have a look at the tombs. We waited for about 30 minutes luckily there wasn’t anyone to usher us in or rush us, which was great. We visited an hour before closing time.

All in all a great visit, however if you are pressed for time then I would give this a miss.

We visited here after the synagogue and after reading a review regarding spices we went in find no 65 and must say it was a good shop. Many sellers tried to coax us into their shops but we decided to go to this one and bought lots of spices and very pleased with service and prices.
We also ate in the little square with tables and chairs before getting to the Mellah and had a simple dish of vegetable tagine and mint tea, it was probably the most flavourful dish we have had so far and good price.
It may look a bit run down here but it was authentic and had a nice feel about it.

Lovely, cozy little shop with genuine products and non-pushy staff. We felt super well treated and bought quite some products. The nice owner even offered us tea (before we bought anything).

These are interesting historical city walls, which give an authentic sense of the city’s history. They are also a useful landmark for finding your way around when you get lost in the medinas!

Walking from Menara airrport to Marrakech town, Bab Agnaou is the first grand gate you come across. This 12th century gate is much more robust than the nearby Er Robb gate, as it is part of the old Kasba defense system.

The gate has recently been well restored. The gate's appearance is perhaps not very colourful, as it is made of grey stone, but the ornamentation is attractive.

This is a 12th century mosque built by the Almoravid dynasty. It is the oldest mosque of Marrakech. You can see that that the building is in disrepair as opposed to the Koutoubia mosque, which is very well maintained. The Almohads demolished the original mosque because they believed it did not face Mecca properly. They rebuilt it, but it but it was ruined again. The mosque was rebuilt again during the 19th century in a very mundane style. Thus it is a mosque with no distinguishing feature other than the distinction that is the seat of the Qadi or the Main Judge of the region.

This gate is situated after Bab Debbagh. It was built in 1126 AD. It is one of the original Almoravid entrances. It is named after the Berber guards from the Banu Aylen Tribe who used to be posted here. This is a historical gate. A battle took place here in 1129 AD. The city was stormed by the Almohad army, they besieged the city. When they tried to enter from this gate they were stopped, from invading Marrakech, by the brave Berber guards. It is a simple ochre coloured gate near Oued Issil. It is located next to the Qadi Ayyaz Mosque.

This is a city gate at the northwestern side of the Marrakesh medina. A bit away from the usual tourist route, Bab Doukkala is a historic tower that maintains the original layout. Good to take a look if time allows.

Bab Taghzout is a strange gate. Although it is one off the 12 original Almoravid gates but it is not connected to the ramparts. There is a very interesting reason why this gate stands in the centre of the Medina. It is because the shrine of the twelfth-century Sufi saint Sidi Bel Abbes lies close to it. During the 17th century sultan Moulay Ismail built a pilgrimage path around the tombs of the seven holy men of Marrakech. After this the area grew into a thickly populated residential neighbourhood, so much so that the city wall was extended to encompass it. It is a beautiful gate with a wooden awning. The wall perished but the gate still stands as an oddity.
