I walked up the hill where Buda Castle and Matthias Church are located. Since it was a long walk, I decided to use the funicular to get down. No one else was using the funicular at the time when I was there, so I had it all to myself.

The view of the Danube, Szechenyi Bridge and St. Stephen's Basilica from the funicular was truly spectacular. The ride took about a minute and I paid 5000 forints for a ticket.

Under the hill there was a long line of people waiting to go up by funicular. From my experience, I would say that instead of waiting in line for a long time, it is better to walk up the hill and use the funicular to get down. (You can walk to Matthias Church along the road and then up the stairs, so it's not a difficult climb.)

Budapest is a very pretty city with many beautiful sites to visit. We did a night time cruise on the Danube which was excellent. We stayed in Pest near the big Synagogue so much on offer in this area great Ruin bar. and many places to eat.
We did have a very poor experience on the metro beware when using they have a system where you have to validate your ticket on buses as well..we had no idea and were fined by a very aggressive inspector.
Not a good start to your city.

Loved this and was nice to get out of the city and away from the crowds. Was about £7 return each on the chairlift. Pay at the machine there by card. Takes about 10 minutes to get to the top where the view is just amazing. Budapest way in the distance. Nice walks at the top and a church you can climb to the top of. Cafes were shut when we did it as probably it’s out of season.
The 291 bus goes direct from town to the chairlift (which is the last stop) so much cheaper than getting a taxi which is about £12.
The best thing we did in Budapest.

Possibly the worst part of our trip to Budapest. The tram system is very confusing, there is no explanation for how to pay for the trams, and the crowds make it difficult to tap one's ticket--and then the tram police come and issue fines, which is a real bummer. We had bought tickets but because they weren't appropriately stamped, we were slapped with a fine. Really put a downer on the whole trip to Budapest.
