- JElliot32New South Wales, Australia4,048 contributionsI didn't expect to find Australia's tallest lighthouse on King Island, but there it is, a mighty impressive monument 48 metres high and built in 1861 from locally quarried granite. The lighthouse still operates, though has been automated for many years. It hasn't seen a lighthouse keeper in a 100 years. It is located at the northern tip of KI, an easy drive from Currie and definitely worth a visit. The local coastline and countryside are also very scenic and add to the grandeur of the location.Written 12 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Globalcitizen00318 contributionsWe booked in at the last minute on our last day on King Island. It turned out to be the highlight of the trip! Our 3 kids had never ridden a horse before. Mick and his wife made sure that they had calm and steady horses as well as provided them with enough instruction so they felt comfortable. We rode to the top of their property and took in the amazing views and also learned about some of the shipwrecks. Again, this was the highlight of our trip and the kids are still talking about the experience. A must do!!!Written 11 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- JElliot32New South Wales, Australia4,048 contributionsThis is an excellent local museum, locate in the lighthouse keeper's house (1880), one of the most historic buildings in KI. It also occupies a prominent site overlooking the town and its picturesque harbour. In some ways the museum is typical of many small-town museums with many rooms overcrowded with old items. As you might expect for King Island, the information on the island's many shipwrecks is particularly strong, with two 'Shipwreck rooms' including one dedicated to the Cataraqui, wrecked here in 1840 with the loss of 399 lives. It was Australia's worst civil maritime disaster. The shed featuring the original crystal lens from the Cape Wickham lighthouse was another highlight. It was reassembled without any instructions by in its entirety by volunteers. A massive achievement I thought. The museum is definitely worth a look - for an hour or twoWritten 9 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Renee EMelbourne, Australia11 contributionsIan was wonderful enough to do a tour at a time that suited us, and it did not disappoint. One of our highlights of our trip, this tour was informative and fun, and such a treat to experience a lighthouse. Getting up the stairs did leave me puffed, but certainly well worth it. Thank you Ian for your wonderful service and hospitality.Written 19 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - James G3 contributionsHeidi is such a lovely person to meet and learn from when you hear her give insight into not only her liquor making but also the island itself. It was a great experience sharing some laughs while we had some taste tests. I happily bought some delicious spirits to take home. Heidi's take on limencello in particular was fantastic and it pleasently surprised my father in law. Will visit again on our next trip to King Island.Written 16 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
