Art Galleries
Artspace Mackay is the regional art gallery owned and operated by Mackay Regional Council and aims to provide visitors to the region with a taste of our unique environment. The gallery includes three impressive exhibition spaces, Foodspace Cafe, and an artists book reading room which houses a collection of artists books and prints of national significance. This purpose-built gallery, designed by award-winning Queensland architects Cox Rayner, forms part of Mackay Regional Council's Cultural Precinct. It provides residents and visitors to Mackay with the opportunity to see art exhibitions by significant international, Australian and local artists and touring exhibitions presented by Australia's largest art galleries and museums. Exhibitions are complemented by innovative education and community activities for all ages. Programs include guided tours, artists' talks, practical art workshops for adults and children as well as professional development opportunities for local artists, teachers and students. Artspace Mackay is also very proud of its region's significant and ongoing investment in public art, including works which line the Pioneer River along the Bluewater Trail. Recent commissions have seen Mackay earn a place on the world map for contemporary public art, with six art installations by Indigenous Australian artist Fiona Foley, two installations by established Queensland artist, Donna Marcus and a recognised commitment to commission further works along the trail. Every two years, Artspace Mackay hosts The Libris Awards, an artists book competition open to all Australian artists, which has become nationally respected and develops awareness of the Mackay Regional Council's significant collection of artists books. The Libris Awards also assists with further development of the collection by facilitating the ongoing acquisition of new works. Today, the Mackay Regional Council Collection is the most focused collection throughout the regional galleries network in Queensland, and contains the third largest collection of artists books in Australia after the National Gallery of Australia and the State Library of Queensland.

During school holidays this place is packed but at all other times it's as quiet as! (I was told) You can just walk in , no fee and the pools are magnificent. When I walked in there was only 1 other person there and the life saver ofcourse.

Great circular bike & walking trail all around Mackay, very good surfaces, mostly off road. We got bike & helmet hire from Corry's Cycles, $30 per adult for all day hire (they're not far from the Caneland part of the trail). We did about 3-4hrs for the whole trail, but you could just do part of it. Easily saw 25 different bird types, including a big Brahminy Kite, and pretty Sunbirds & Rainbow Bee-eaters. The Mackay Council has done a great job of this trail, with good availability of toilets, nice waterside picnic areas, benches, and some fishing points, and solid wide boardwalks to take you into the mangroves. There were a few cafes near the old wharf and history mural, or the Botanical Gardens cafe on the other half of the trail.

A must see for anyone interested in Orchids, Ferns and other tropical plants. There were a nice selection of various orchid species and hybrids on show. It’s also nice to have someone in attendance to answer questions.

Quite a large shopping centre with a good mix of shops. Plenty of parking, undercover or out in the open. Very central to the business district of Mackay.

Very special place with warm, natural atmosphere and vibe. My boyfriend and I have enjoyed pancakes at the cafe on a Sunday morning on two occasions after a scenic walk. Definitely a gorgeous place for out-of-towners to enjoy local Mackay flora and fauna.

On our visit there was a large display of woodcuts and etchings... quite a different take on art. The associated cafe does a good coffee

A quick trip out here will not take long. Great views and there is a telescope for whale spotting. Elevated with views over 2 bays.

Driving to the end of the road passed the Bucasia Beach Caravan Park we arrived at a small carpark/boatramp with access to Bucasia Beach. This beach was a real gem, peaceful with only a few visitors walking along the shoreline and stunning views over the ocean, across to Sunset Beach and the boats on the estuary. On the sandy path down to the beach an information board stated that between the months of October and March marine turtles visit this beach, what a sight that would be.

Took the grand children to the performance of Wizard of Oz - which was a local production. Congratulations to all involved the MECC is a fantastic venue even in the back row with young children they had great views of the stage. The acoustics are brilliant and they could hear perfectly - such a polished professional performance was an absolute delight and I cannot wait to take them to another production thanks to all cast and crew
