George St is one of the main roads running through the CBD. It starts under the Harbour Bridge and runs through the Rocks area to Circular Quay and right through to Chinatown and Haymarket.
It is noteworthy for two main reasons.
Firstly, the new light rail runs along George St, making it very quick and easy to jump on and off and get to different parts of the city.
Secondly, it’s a very walkable street. For much of it, there’s no traffic and there are several points of interest along the way.
Starting from Circular Quay, the highlights are: historic Cadman’s Cottage, the Tank Stream Fountain, the Harry Seidler designed Australia Square (it’s worth stopping to look at several modern sculptures in the forecourt and courtyard), Martin Place and the GPO, the Apple Store, the Victorian-style Strand Arcade, the QVB shopping centre, the 19th century Sydney Town Hall and St Andrews Cathedral.
There is not much more of interest on George St beyond this point, so there’s no need to keep going. If you’re planning on visiting Chinatown, it’s still another 15 minutes walk and I’d suggest jumping on the light rail.
