- kunalKolkata (Calcutta), India113 contributionsTabo monastery has a very old history. In fact, the mud plastered old monastery is a gem with lots of exquisite paintings. Often it is referred to as ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’. It was heartening to see that the paintings were in good health.
One must visit this place during sunny morning for better visibility due to diffusing natural light from the top.Written 28 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - LalitjulleyJim Corbett National Park, India168 contributionsthe tabo monastery is very beautifully build out of mud ... it is said to be 1000 year old ... .. the mural paintings are amazing ... no photography allowed... the golden temple is said to be once covered totally in gold but not now...Written 2 September 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Radhika BharatIndia34 contributionsOld monastery has a different aura altogether, you can just come here anytime and sit benches are placed at various corners. There are many Gompa and Stupas in the complex and it's a photographers paradise. We personally decided to capture milky way from there observe night sky.
Tabo caves can also be seen and photographed from the campus.Written 28 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - KunjanChoksiVadodara36 contributionsMahakala Vajra-bhairava Temple is worth visiting to study different sects in Buddhism. Small and beautiful temple with ancient and horrific idols of deities often called 'Temple of Horror'.Written 20 May 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Anil276Perth, Australia366 contributionsWas fortunate enough to be guided by an ex Monk Daichand ( a friend of my uncle Anji Mehra) who we met after nearly 24 years. The paintings and scriptures are to die for. The writing on the parchment paper has been kept intact in immaculate condition, but the walls that were recently plastered are showing signs of water seepage and I am afraid will continue to detoriate if nothing is done to prevent it. Unfortunately the govt is handling this and I dont think theres much hope. The monks and volunteers however, are trying their best. The aura and atmosphere within is electrifying (in the absence of electricity inside) - theres only natural light and the numerous Devi's and Devta's glare at you from their high perched pedestals. Photography isnt allowed inside. See the attached photos of the exterior of the monastry. I highly recommend you use Daichand as your local guide as you will elarn hell of a lot about the monastryWritten 26 September 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Backpacker's LifeNew Delhi120 contributionsI had waited a long time but its said that you visit a temple only when you get a "call" and finally i did and it was worth the wait. The temple is covered in gold which is intricately carved. It is well maintained and very clean. Unlike many other holy place, there is no one to fleas you in the name of God. You donate what you wish. You can have 'langar' and can also help in the same.Written 1 March 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
