This is the second time I’ve visited Maru Koala Park having been there once a few years ago. Last time I went with a couple of friends and just visited the park; this time, I took my parents there and we did three animal encounters together.

Originally we were only going to do the two due to online booking issues. Jackie, however, helped us to upgrade our booking to an Ultimate Encounter upon arrival. I found her to be very pleasant and helpful in explaining how to get to our animal encounters.

The other staff were also very pleasant and professional, especially Maddi (keeper at the koala encounter), Margaret (cafe worker) and the male (name unknown) keeper running the reptile talk and encounter. I really appreciated the way Margaret took the time to find out about onion content in food after learning I am allergic to onions.

The three of us really enjoyed our three animal encounters. I particularly like the way the animals are tactile adventures; also, the way we went from touching what felt like a pine cone with Ed the shingle back lizard to waxy scales with Murray the snake to fluffy almost cat-like fur with Coral the koala.

We went on a week day outside of school holidays, too, so we had the place more or less to ourselves. I imagine it could get quite busy on school holidays and/or weekends when families bring school aged kids. Between the animals and the mini golf course (we didn’t visit this, though) it would be very appealing to young families.

If you’ve got an onion allergy, however, please note: there are very limited food options. As I said: while I appreciated the way that Margaret took the time to check on food content, I was disappointed at how few options they had there for those with onion allergies. The addition of some basic cheese or cheese and tomato toasties or more sandwich options without onions (the only option was a chicken focaccia and I don’t eat chicken) would have encouraged me to have given Maru Koala Park a 5 star rating.

This is our favourite spot for coffee. We love the peaceful atmosphere and the views across the bay. We call it our coffee spot.

this is well worth while for everyone to have a short break. The Memorial mosaic wall is beautiful and must be seen by everyone. the short walk with the history notes is very interesting.

This is not the glamor beach that tourists are looking for, but it is beautiful. Some stones mixed with sand, and a lovely old pier. A BBQ and a small grassy area to enjoy a picnic.
