I highly recommend Magnus Viking as a guide. I originally wanted to hike the Laugevegur trail, but Magnus suggested the alternative Kjalvegur Trail. This is the ancient Viking Trail that the chieftains of the Northern Quarter have been using to walk to their annual parliament Thingvellir) since the first millenium. The original cairns still mark the trail. Magnus pulled this amazing trick: the huts are spaced a day's hike apart; so by filling the smallest hut, no one else could be within a day's hike of us. We walked 50 miles across the interior between Hofsjokull and Langjokull glaciers without seeing a single other hiker! Magnus was a walking encyclopedia of Icelandic language, culture, folklore, humor, history and geography. We marveled at glaciers, natural hot springs, mountains, rainbows, aurora, waterfalls, lava flows, lakes, and rivers. Magnus took very good care of us. Dinners were Icelandic recipes and even after our daily workouts, we were never able to finish all the food he prepared. He took very good care of us, even on one day when we had TERRIBLE weather. We might do this again.
