This is a great library that is an architectural wonder. There are various areas for relaxing, reading, and studying throughout the building. It is located downtown beside the main train station. Definitely a place to visit while in Helsinki!

Anybody can enter to admire the University Library built above the metro station and designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects in 2012. There is a small door at Kaisaniemi on street level but the main entrance is on Fabianinkatu. A connection through several doors and corridors leads to another remarkable showcase of Finnish architecture, the Porthania which too belongs to Helsinki University. Aarne Ervi whose works include the Töölö Library and the almost derelict Heikintori shopping center in Tapiola designed it in the 1950's.

The white Carrara marble is the trademark of Aalto's masterpiece but it doesn't tolerate the Finnish climate. Already 30 years after the opening in 1971 the exterior of the building was replaced for the first time, now a new operation with Lasa marble will take place during the next two years. A small substitute hall in wood has been erected in front of the construction site. It looks interesting with a long sheltered corridor where the wooden pillars have still some branches intact. A restaurant with a large terrace overlooking the Töölö bay will enjoy mainly evening sun.

Took us a while to find this because we were expecting an actual building not a hut in the square. Nevertheless, the staff were so friendly and helpful. Really great customer service

A winding main staircase, a rotunda with columns and a loft for newspapers are the architectural elements giving the red brick building from 1912 its character. The first publicly funded library in Helsinki was designed by Karl Hård af Segerstad. The array of things you can loan nowadays is ever expanding, there is even a carrier bike by the main entrance.

Dropped in since had a couple of hours to spend before continuing my journey.

New, clean, nice lounge with good facilities for working. Visit includes hot food, which was very tasty.

    Very friendly personnel. Warmly recommended.

The main entrance to this striking library is located at Unioninkatu 36, close to Senaatintori square.

The library's main building is designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel. It was completed in 1845. Until August 2006, it was known as the Helsinki University Library.

The main building with the stunning Cupola Hall is one of the most renowned landmarks of the early 19th century Empire architecture.

The newer extension is called the Rotunda. It was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström and completed in 1906.
