What travellers are saying
- LouProsper, TX26 contributionsStreet food, restaurant, wine and souvenirs give you something to do while waiting for sunset. We were also entertained by a street musician while sitting on the steps looking over the city. Lovely afternoon walk up to the Piazzale also provide opportunities for more photo opportunities.Written 23 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - travelbugSouth Carolina149 contributionsWonderful gallery with all the iconic artwork of the great masters. One of the best museum tours we have taken in Europe as far as crowds go. Most are so crowded that you really can’t enjoy the experience.Written 22 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mike I7 contributionsOur guide was amazing. Her knowledge of history was amazing. The tour was well paced and gave everyone time to absorb the surroundings. The emotional reaction to The Last Supper was surprising but inspiring.Written 17 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Extremely normal personHouston, TX74 contributionsThis visit was my first to this museum, though I had been to the other big ones in Florence (Uffizi, Santa Maria del Fiore). This visit was made with my wife and children (15, 11, 8yo) as part of a large tour with a choral group. I did not how this would go with children, but I was pleasantly surprised by nearly every aspect of our visit to the Galleria dell'Accademia.
One of the main reasons people seem to come here is Michelangelo's David. This did not disappoint. This masterwork really lives up to the hype, and its situation is beautifully appointed, allowing even relatively large groups of people to see it from a 360Ëš vantage.
It would be a great shame to visit this museum and stop with the David, great though it is. We visited several of the antiquities and medieval galleries, and they were stunning. There was a great breadth of pieces, they were beautifully staged and maintained, and the great density of wonders was just so marvelous. Our kids were also enchanted by the works and we enjoyed some great family time discussing them.
I should say that we had a guide for the day, and he provided excellent context and details for the David part of our museum tour. Though my wife and I are art enthusiasts, we did not have the background (even remotely) to fully appreciate the sculpture, and our experience would have been diminished without our good guide. I think that the guide is the reason that our 15yo named David his favorite part of the museum (in a happy way). If you do not have a guide and are not an art historian, I would tag along when a group goes through-- it's not like they clear the area for tour groups.
The large medieval collection near the David was my favorite part. As I noted above, just so much variety of pieces, wonderfully preserved, and so vivid. I highly recommend this museum.Written 25 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I used it a couple of times and enjoyed my food. Wandering waiters will take drink orders for you and deliver the drinks (for neo extra charge). If you're enjoying Florence and don't want to take the time it does to sit down in a restaurant, this is a good choice and is centrally located. Unlike restaurants, there is no cover charge, too. ;-)Written 2 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Cathy LToronto, Canada230 contributionsPiazza del Duomo is definitely one of the top attractions in Florence.
The square was bustling with tourists, as expected, and I noticed that restaurants and cafes around the piazza charge a bit of a premium due to the location. However, there are plenty of options nearby if you’re looking for something more affordable.
I was amazed by the sheer number of visitors, all waiting patiently to enter the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Besides the cathedral, the Bell Tower, the Baptistery, and numerous shops and cafés make it a vibrant public space worth visiting.Written 23 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Karin F1 contributionThe Basilica of Santa Croce is such an amazing, not-to-be missed treasure of Florence…made even better with the wonderful guide, Dan Harper, an old friend from Chicago. His 2-1/2 hr tour truly shows his love of this church and all that lies within it. Dan imparts so much of the church’s history, and couples it with many humorous anecdotes, making his tour both informative and entertaining! Highly recommend…and can be arranged by emailing Dan at danharperflorence@gmail.com.Written 26 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Amy S19 contributionsYOU HAVE TO VISIT PALAZZO VECCHIO!! Honestly the outside is so pretty but the inside is breathtakingly beautiful! The staff were very friendly and really helpful as I have to use a walking stick and the lifts are in a closed off section they allow you through. The architecture is just so incredible it's worth every penny, you can get round in an hour but I could of easily spent all day here!Written 4 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ratana G1 contributionGreat place on a rainy day if you’ve got kids/toddlers to entertain. Was worried it wouldn’t be all that interactive for our 19month old but there was plenty for her to interact with. Would highly recommend.Written 10 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Dimitris LSydney, Australia54,756 contributionsCampanile di Giotto was constructed in the 14th century. The person responsible for its building was the artist Giotto whose name the tower bears. It's a beautiful building and the views from the top are absolutely wonderful, provided you can climb the 414 steps up the tower and then go down the same way! It's much easier than it might sound!Written 30 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Real Woman8 contributionsThis Palazzo has a lot to see and it is really worth a visit. We spent a day doing the gardens, royal rooms, modern art and costumes. Don't worry you can leave to get pizza for lunch and come back in - they are all day tickets. Modern art (pre WWII) was actually our favourite - some amazing pieces.
The one thing that was annoying is that you cannot read all the titles on the frames - due to the cordons, and only some have labels or comments in the audio tour guide. As there is also no wifi and poor mobile signal, there is no way to research as you go or translate. Down load a better guide if you like to know more about what you are looking at.Written 3 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. However, by walking a little further up the hill to Basilica San Miniato al Monte, the view of the city is even better. From there, you can include a few classic Tuscan cypress trees in your panoramic shots (see the attached image).
The fact that there’s also a picturesque church and an enchanting cemetery at your photo spot certainly doesn’t hurt, does it?Written 6 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. 1) We bought our tickets on line for a specific time (Best thing to do). However having read the large amount of documentation I got (in English) to ensure we did everything necessary viz the timings etc we arrived, queued and were then told we needed formal ID with us. Nowhere in anything sent to me did it say this. We were sent away and told we could come back any time that day if we had ID. For a strictly timed access system we thought this strange but were glad and did so.
2) if you are over or close to 6 foot tall wear a hat. With all the best intentions and ducking you are still going to clatter your head on low brickwork.
Also note that if for any reason you delay getting to the top (fatigue or a delay photographing the frescoes) you will find your time at the top very limited. Those that arrive first get longest before they clear the deck and send you downwards.
The stairs up were pretty challenging for most people as they vary in lerngth and steepness. There were some great views inside the stairway and out of the windows. Also great views over the side of the dome once outside. The catwalks (one up and different one down) around the dome is very narrow, plexiglass obstructs every view, and an official kept telling people to keep moving but not too fiercely. We managed quite a few decent photos both through and above the plastic. You can see the distant dome from the church floor for free but you miss the experience (and the pain of successfully getting to the top!).Written 7 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
