We saw this magnificent cathedral only from the outside and I wish we had more time to tour the inside of it and go up in the famous dome. The exterior limestone itself is simply gorgeous and the detailing on the exterior is a work of art. A must-see if you are in Florence.

The Florentine Masters created beautiful paintings. There are several areas to explore, including a well-designed and contemporary museum. See the well-known funerals as well!

There are also really amazing wall murals in the enormous main hall. Over the years, this palace (and additions to it) has been built using incredibly creative technical techniques. It's amazing to see the continuing excavations beneath the palace. The signage is multilingual and well-designed.

Many people head to Piazzale Michelangelo to capture good shots of Florence from above, and the rather dull square is indeed suitable for that.

However, by walking a little further up the hill to Basilica San Miniato al Monte, the view of the city is even better. From there, you can include a few classic Tuscan cypress trees in your panoramic shots (see the attached image).

The fact that there’s also a picturesque church and an enchanting cemetery at your photo spot certainly doesn’t hurt, does it?

Lots to take in when visiting this museum. In addition to the well known pieces of sculpture, the other thousands of exhibited items are magnificent testimony to the art of the region. Each room held wonders, especially the ceramics display as we did not expect to see so much perfection perfectly arranged. In addition, there were many chairs and benches available so the visitor could rest a bit, gaze in awe (and that includes the painted ceilings) and then proceed to the next wonder. Allow more time than is suggested.

Built in the 14th century, it functions as an open-air sculpture gallery at the Piazza della Signori next to the Palazzo Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery. The sculpture highlights include the Rape of the Sabine Women and Perseus with the Head of Medusa. It is certainly worth seeing when visiting the piazza.

The Baptistry di San Giovanni is thought to date back to the 11th century. In addition to its astounding history, the octagonal structure is a beautiful work of art. It is adorned with three sets of bronze doors including a replica of Lorenzo Ghiberti's The Gates of Paradise. The original doors can be found inside the nearby Opera dell Duomo Museum. You can purchase an online pass from the Florence Cathedral website that allows entrance inside the Baptistry. The Brunelleschi Pass and the Giotto Pass provide entrance to the climb to the top of the Duomo or Campanile respectively along with entrance to the other sights at the Piazza del Duomo but if you have no interest in making these climbs that involve over 400 steps, you can buy the less expensive Ghiberti Pass. This allows entrance to the Baptistry, the Santa Reparata under the Cathedral and to the Museum mentioned above. Entrance to the Cathedral itself is free.

An exceptionally beautiful Baroque church. Well worth the extra walk from other attractions. Plus you can pop into the Church of San Marco next door.

The ninety four metre Tower of Arnolfo is part of the Palazzo Vecchio. Interestingly the tower does not seem to be centrally located in the palazzo, the reason being that it had been built for a previous building! It remained when the Palazzo was completed. Its main use appears to have been that of a prison!

Beautiful public square adjacent to the Piazza del Duomo that surrounds the Florence Cathedral, Giotto Bell Tower and Baptistry of San Giovanni. It's a charming and lively area but can be quite busy with tourists in the middle of the day. Try to visit in the early morning or after dark.

Sant' Apollonia is a 14th-century former Benedictine monastery located along Via Ventisette Aprile and just a couple minutes walk from Piazza San Marco.

Today, you will find a small museum here with some fine artwork and frescos including 'The Last Supper' a masterpiece by Andrea del Castagno (1447) along with other early Italian Renaissance artists. The Last Supper is remarkable and interestingly predates Da Vinci's last Supper in Milan by nearly 50 years.

Opening hours are 8.15pm to 1.50pm daily and entry is free. Definitely worth popping in for a quick visit if you plan to explore this area of the city centre and enjoy viewing fine artworks.

The Pazzi Chapel is located at the cloister grounds within the Basilica di Santa Croce compound. It is believed to be the work of Filippo Brunelleschi and is considered a Renaissance architectural masterpiece. The interior is open and empty compared to elaborate chapels found elsewhere in the church. The walls and ceiling has lovely terracotta bas-reliefs by Luca della Robbia. Worth a look-see while exploring the Santa Croce church grounds.
