Seeing an opera here was a major item on my bucket list. And La Scala did not disappoint: exquisite singing, awesome acoustics, innovative staging and flawless pairing with the orchestra. We reserved tickets for Rigoletto months in advance, but decided to splurge on prime box seats when we couldn't get unobstructed views from the less expensive galleries. Good choice, because the people sitting at the back of our box couldn't really see the staging or the English translation screen and left early.
The theater itself is not as fancy as its counterparts in Paris or Vienna, but you'll want to dress up to fit in with the fashionable Milan crowd. At the interval, head for the bar to try LaScala's house brand of prosecco, 15 euros for a generous pour. Worth every eurocent, if you love opera. I'm already saving up to go back.
