- evonwise17Windsor, UK220 contributionsI was recommended by the receptionist at our hotel to visit here to learn more of the history of Matera and this museum offers an interactive video exhibition explaining everything were well. We were moved through 3 rooms in a small group to watch the videos which were both evocative and informative - the location of the museum in an old palazzo also added to the atmosphere. If you are a tourist interested in more than just strolling the quaint streets and want to understand the town then this is a must visit spot!Written 7 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Thankfully we got a taxi to take us, because I think we might have struggled to find it. The narration was fascinating.Written 26 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- happyjoyandfreeShirley, NY21 contributionsIf you are in Matera, you can enter right from the walkway along the scenic view. It's a short but tough hike down a ravine/gorge to the suspension bridge down by the river. You can then hike to and on the other side but have to come all the way back unless you leave a car at the other entrance. Definitely worth doing and a good workout. You must wear good shoes!!Written 21 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- bigmac8 contributionsDid not find a tour matching our dates/times so organized our own itinerary and visit using various online and printed sources. We had a rent car so enjoyed the freedom to schedule our visit. Spent several hours in Matera-Sasi - beautiful and interesting very old city.Written 9 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Liz B1 contributionMarc was a passionate and knowledgeable guide who showed us how olive oil used to be made in comparison to today’s techniques. It was a sobering reminder of how quiet and thoughtful things used to be. An hour more than well spent. The church is interesting as it is partially in a cave and has an interesting shape. Would say that you have not fully seen Matera if you have not included this church in your trip.Written 20 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was developed after people learned they could cut limestone blocks for building their houses instead of digging the caves.
The whole area is absolutely mind blowing - allow at least one full day and one night. Walk as much you can over the area and admire terrific different view points.Written 9 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was built in 13.century in Romanesque style. It’s an impressive building outside but the interior is more beautiful with amazing decorations, marble colums and frescos. Nowdays it’s a museum, the 3,50euros. Near the cathedral there are some good spots where the view is fantastic.Written 19 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
