At the first glance at the fountain, the same thought comes to everyone that Justice is depicted with her eyes open.... Just like in the German-Israeli film directed by Chaim Tabakman, although it's about something completely different... The Fountain of Justice is the oldest in Frankfurt, the first version was created in 1543. As you know, in order for the fountain to work, it is necessary to create water pressure. After all, a centrifugal pump with a drive that draws in water due to the suction force was invented by the Frenchman Papin a little later in the XVII century. The fact is that Roemer is located below the Friedberg field, from which water was supplied. There was enough water due to the high groundwater level, but it got here because of the slope. The first fountain was primitive in appearance and served the task of supplying urban residents with water. The sculptor Johann Hocheisen created the fountain here in 1611. He symbolically depicted not only justice, but also the self-awareness of Frankfurt. Already at that time, a trading city, symbolized by libra, but capable of defending the rules of trade with a sword. In 1612, the traditional method was added to the coronation of the emperor - water from the breasts of four nymphs is poured out at the corners of the pedestal as a symbol of fertility. Or maybe to please the sick Emperor Matthias with erotic details.. By the way, during the coronation, wine, not water, flowed from the breasts of the nymphs. It turned out to be two pleasures in one fountain: to caress a woman's breasts, and to drink wine... The emperor was the first to do this, then ordinary Frankfurters were allowed to approach their breasts. The wine was served from a building on a hill through wooden pipes. At the end of the ceremony, there was not enough wine and the enraged Frankfurters and guests of this glorious city vented their displeasure with vandalism, breaking off the details of the fountain. The current copy of that fountain stands here since 1887 and is also indirectly connected with wine, because it was created with the money of the wine merchant Manskopf. The figure of Justice was cast in bronze, and the bowl and column were sculpted from red sandstone, like the original. But, of course, the main damage to both the fountain and the entire German architecture was caused not by drunken fellow citizens, but by Anglo-American aviation in World War II. Surprisingly, the whole of Roemer was destroyed, and the Frankfurt Justice was not taken by the Allied bombs. Once again, the fountain was reconstructed during construction on the metro area and underground parking. But after the end, everything was returned to its original place, in its original form. To the delight of the Frankfurters who make dates here.... Well, and to us tourists too..However, the water no longer beats from the breasts of the nymphs. There is no such impression...
