- Trevor T5 contributionsWe loved how the mix of ancient artifacts and modern architecture engaged every member of the family. The Egyptian collection stood out in particular, spatking curiosity in both kids and aduls. An excellent spot for a short yet memorable journey into history!Written 4 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim1,529 contributionsAfter visiting the Berlin Dom (Berlin Cathedral), our family paid a visit to ALTE NATIONALGALERIE. The museum costs 12 EUR for adult, and 6 EUR for student with identification (the staffs did honor international student identification, but wanted you to prove that you were still a student).
We find that the museum to be well organized, with a good collection of modern art. You can download the museum audio guide freely from iPhone or Google Play store. The audio guide was great, and offers valuable insight into many of the great paintings and sculptures made by Renoirs, Manets and Monet.Written 8 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The visit is free of charge. A true must see!Written 4 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- EmmaJMStevensWarwick, UK198 contributionsThe tour of Templehoft is definitely still available. We selected an English language tour and this was led by a friendly and knowledgeable Dutchman.
Unfortunately the main hall is currently not open to visitors but, other than this, the tour is an illuminating and unusual way to learn more about the history of Berlin in the twentieth century.
There is a reasonable amount of walking and stairs involved - all well worth it.Written 30 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Byzantine art focuses on the expression of religion, specifically orthodox Christianity and the images exhibited were very much controlled by the church when produced. If region is not an interest for you then this museum may not be your thing. I kind of fit into that category as I visited without researching beforehand. I did however think this was an amazing building, with great organisation and it wasn’t packed with tourists (probably because it was January). I spent my visit looking at the expressions posed by the subjects of the sculptures and paintings. Some of which were quite serious, beautiful, ugly old and young . A few that were probably unintentionally comical but that might be my twisted humour!
My advice research before visiting.Written 21 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RinLondonLondon, UK95 contributionsMagnificent location! The tour was superb, and very informative. Our guide Matthias shared great info and added some fun to the tour.
The art collection is also very good and the building in itself is worth a visit.
I like that the tour included info about the art as well as the building throughout.Written 28 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sandy SAlbuquerque, NM1,046 contributionsThe Berlinische Galerie is a city, rather than national, exhibit space and thus open on Mondays. The permanent exhibition spans works by local artists from 1870 to 1980. Although they are representative, the paintings aren’t distinguished. Clearly, the best examples of late 19th and 20th Century Berlin artists reside in the Altesnationalgalerie and the Martin-Gropius-Bau. The Berlinische Galerie did have the space and lighting for its full-on temporary exhibit of about 100 Edvard Munch paintings, with detailed biographical information. We came away convinced that he was not a very good artist and certainly an unpleasant man, but obviously skilled at obtaining publicity and ground-breaking in his gloomy symbolism.Written 4 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JonkokcKansas City, MO12 contributionsThis is a museum for those interested in Greek, Roman and Etruscan art and history. If you’re not at all interested or open to learning about it, then skip this museum. But if you are interested or open to it, then this would be a great introduction to these ancient worlds. It’s not a large museum. Very focused and has a very simple, clear sequence/route of rooms all on two floors that circle an impressive (but mostly decorative) rotunda. The installations of artifacts and artwork are all nicely spaced out and handsomely presented. German and well-translated English texts sit equally side-by-side. I recommend stopping now and then to really read (or listen in the audio guide) to some of the stories behind or depicted in the pieces. These stories really bring things to life in entertaining and sometimes horrifying ways.
There is a small cafe with minimal food options. The audio guide is useful if you don’t want to spend a lot of time reading the room and item descriptions.
For those interested in the naughtier bits of ancient history and art, the “Garden of Delights” room offers a collection of items more overtly sexually-oriented. All of it thoughtfully presented. But let’s see you try to keep a straight face when you spot the flying phallus with feet and a tail.Written 29 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - rgl201100 contributionsKathe Kollwitz is one of my favorite artists, and I have long wanted to visit this museum. It is fairly small, and mostly features prints and a few sculptures, but these are incredibly rich. She was an expressionist whose prints feature poverty and despair but also revolt. The art can be depressing and is certainly not for everyone's tastes, but for some it will be a revelation and I find her art incredibly moving.Written 11 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
