What travellers are saying
- Pritesh MLeamington Spa, UK744 contributionsMy wife and I were in the region for our anniversary and decided to go to Whitby Abbey. Relatively easy to get to (if you're following the satnav) and good car parking facility. Entrance fees, I guess, were OK. When we arrived, they were conducting a bird of prey show, which was really professional and fun to watch. The information about the ruins, are not nearby, but there is info in the entrance shops, of which there are two.
If you're in the vicinity, and not been before, then I'd recommend a visit.
Unlikely that I'll be going again, but you never know!Written 14 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. At lower tides the beach is a large sand expanse with rock pools along the way. There is something here for everybody to do including public facilities, cafésas well as the wonderful beach and clean sea. We spent several hours on the beach and in the sea body boarding and had a great time. The beaches around Whitby are certainly something to do in their own right.Written 10 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Peter BWarwickshire, UK693 contributionsA cool & cloudy Sunday morning took us to Falling Foss. The car park was not too full when we arrived, but overflowing when we parted. It was also free of charge.
There was a steep descent from the car park to the cafe via a muddy, poorly surfaced road which led to a sweet little bridge which had its own troll to protect it. We had not long had full breakfast so had no requirement for the cafe, which was open an attracting other visitors. We headed for the waterfall and I could hardly believe my eyes as I saw both young lady and a gentleman in swimming attire splashing and swimming in the pool below the falls. My wife must have recognised the lady as she said, “Gosh, that’s Mai Zing”.
We then took the wooden walkway along the little stream in the wooded ravine for a hundred metres before returning via the steep hill to my car. We loved the exercise and lovely walk, though others might find the steep, rough road a challenge.Written 6 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Doc22407Middlesbrough, UK270 contributionsI've been to whitby so many times but I had no idea this place existed but it's well worth the short walk to visit. The museum has a varied and eclectic range of exhibits, from taxidermy to assorted weaponry, and from fossils to exquisite model ships made by French POWs out of bones!
Definitely recommend a visit if you like these sort of golden age of adventure collections.Written 15 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Couple of benches to stop in the way up. Look out for the Roman numeral numbering the steps in every 10th step.Written 7 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Richard BBelper, UK546 contributionsFantastic beach, great for a walk with the dog. An excellent beach, walk from Whitby to Sandsend when the tide is out. - MadMac66Fullerton, CA190 contributionsMy wife and I visited Whitby in September 2024 and of course any visit to Whitby has to include the Abbey. I did not know it when planning our trip, but this church was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, so it was very cool and interesting to visit St Mary's after the Abbey.
You can immediately see why this place is revered by Stoker and goths everywhere (the annual Whitby Goth Festival is hosted here). The weather worn ancient graves, all leaning hither and tither in the uneven ground creates an epic backdrop to any good horror story. The magnificent huge Celtic Cross the pride of the grounds, check out the carvings on each side representing different aspects of the life of 7th century Anglo-Saxon poet, Caedmon.
The church itself was closed, so I cannot speak to its interior. The location, in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the town high above the north sea, is epic though.
We didn't walk the 199 steps up the cliffs. We drove to the Abbey parking lot. Just made more sense to us - thats a whole lot of steep steps to climb.
We spent a good half hour walking the grounds. Time well spent, and as I said, a bonus to the Abbey visit. If you are in the UK, Whitby is a must visit town. It's a really lovely place, and the Abbey and St Mary's have to be on the list of things to do when you are there. Very highly recommended.Written 12 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You follow your nose around the house and self-guide. When we visited, a knowledgeable staff member was on hand to answer any questions that we had. At the top of the house is a display area, currently focussed on Cook's links to polar exploration and includes some very interesting artefacts.Written 1 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - marymary27Scarborough, UK948 contributionsThe display area is small, but very well arranged. The tanks are clean and the water clear, low enough for children to look into easily. There is a small shop. All staff were welcoming, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Suitable for toddlers to pensioners!Written 18 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Becky Allen HollandBarnsley, UK338 contributionsGreat walk along the pier and to the lighthouse and I think the lighthouse in Whitby that I sawed yesterday reminds me of Flamborough lighthouse the one that I went there back in August 2018 which is 6 years ago it was the Flamborough lighthouse and I did see it when I was on Sandsend beach with my Mum when we were there. Great views of the beach and Whitby itself.Written 27 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Sue_and_Andy_66Horsforth, UK6,365 contributionsNice park a few minutes away from the beach. Note dogs are not allowed probably accounts for a plentiful squirrels that frequent here . If you can bring some peanuts for them, as they are quite tame and some will take from your hand.
