As part of a group of moderately overweight, formerly athletic people, who vacation annually in St Lucia we’d seen Fort Rodney several times from a distance.

This year we went. It was fantastic. The views from the Fort and the signal point are worth the effort. When we got done we went to the little restaurant there and had great local food with a great view.

Derek Walcott Square, Castries. Before entering the square/park one must stand in awe at the huge saman tree – I was told its over 300 years old - with its huge and spreading overhanging branches at the entrance. As you enter under the great arch bearing the Walcott name a narrow path leads you through beautifully landscaped gardens with colorful flower beds. There is a small fountain and a bandstand. This site is an oasis of peace, contemplation and remembrance despite being in central Castries. Have a look at the busts of St. Lucians, Derek Walcott Nobel prize poet winner for literature 1992 and Sir Arthur Lewis also a Nobel prize winner in economics 1979. The park was renamed three times before settling on its present name. There’s also a monument to locals who lost their lives in the war. Do cross the street and engage with the local sidewalk vendor of jewelry made from copperwire. Very beautifully crafted.

On our taxi tour he took us to the outside of the governers house. All gated of course. Apparently Teresa May is staying soon. Probs need a break after brexit chaos! At the lookout down the road it's a great view but you need to get through the vendors first which isn't easy.

Authentic island life with open air living.

Come prepared to truly live with nature. The hosts are so caring , they gave us a tour of the plantation telling us all the history of the place - it’s holds a special place in hearts of locals too. You need a car to stay here but lots to do and see locally. The local beach called Laborie was a real gem , especially on a Sunday when the locals come to relax. Local good restaurants are a little drive away so come prepared to do a little cooking - local hosts will also cook for you if give them notice.

Places we visited and loved - mud bath, tet Paul great view and walk, toraille waterfall. Hotel chocolat for a sunset drink and view of the pitons and a river taxi from soufiere to sugar beach for lunch and back during sunset

Amazing unspoilt part of the Caribbean- will be back

Pics included are from the house (open air shower room)
Local land on balenbouche - including a small beach and sunset At the local beach
