What travellers are saying
- JamesCardiff, UK494 contributionsWe recently enjoyed our fifth visit to Labadee Beach, and it was likely our most enjoyable yet! Traveling with our young kids (ages 7 and 4), we felt completely safe and able to relax in this RCI-owned area. The convenience of the small land train, which takes you from the ship to the main marketplace in about five minutes, made it easy to explore the area without the need for additional excursions.
The splash area was a hit with the kids, providing nearly an hour of fun before we settled at one of the nearby coves to relax on sun loungers and swim in the sea. The food provided by RCI was simple but delightful, though not quite on par with Coco Cay.
While the main marketplace had a lovely atmosphere, with friendly and relaxed shopkeepers, we found the local market sellers to be somewhat intimidating. Despite their vibrant and varied offerings, the aggressive sales tactics were a significant deterrent. It would be wonderful if the local sellers could adopt a more laid-back approach similar to that of the main marketplace, as this would encourage families like ours to feel more comfortable browsing and shopping.
On a side note, our daughter was excited to try the metal waterslide, but we were surprised to learn it cost $48 for both an adult and child. We ultimately decided to skip it, which was disappointing.
Overall, we had a great time at Labadee Beach and would happily return on another RCI cruise. We hope that the local vendors can adopt a more welcoming attitude, as this would enhance the experience and encourage more visitors to explore and shop.
Kudos to all RCI staff with the company name badge who were very friendly & helpful.Written 3 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Cons: They need to stop having vendors inside the fort.
It's ludicrous.
Too many people at the entrance it gives unsafe feelings, plus they kept asking you for money like you were a machine.Written 12 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We learned so much about the origins and culture of Haiti.Written 24 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Diane HCharlottesville, VA68 contributionsDifficult to get to, but entirely worth it! Two options, basically--either boat from Petit Goave or hiking in. I chose the boat, arranged through the Fort Royal Hotel. They include a picnic lunch--basically carried in and reheated there. However, there are restaurants on the beach and you could order food there--which is probably preferable. When I went it was a weekday and there were no other visitors. Some reasonable snorkeling around the rocky outcrops.Written 9 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MadisonMollyMadison, WI12 contributionsFun retail place to spend an hour just shopping - proceeds support women and their children. Go mid-morning to shop then stay for lunch at a roof-top cafe - excellent coffee!Written 18 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bhtiekBatu Ferringhi, Malaysia87 contributionsAn imposing structure that dominates the town, very "Domus" like a la Florence. Best photographed from the surrounding elevations.Written 13 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Odyssey143784Pelham, NY21 contributionsThis place is majestical! This is my second time going there. Each time I learn something new. Haiti is rich in history and this place captures Haiti's history like no other place in Haiti. The hike up and down is brutal, so make sure you train your body 2 to 3 months in advance if you are not an active person. I used music to motivate me. The downside to this trip is the constant begging from those who either live in the area or staff that works there. They cluster around me in a way that was uncomfortable. They don't mean any harm and they backed off when I told them "no thank you," but for a tourist location I do expect less harassment. Another thing that bothered me is the treatment to the horses that transports customers to and from the Citadel. They constantly whipped their horses, so I decided not to use the horse because of this. Other than those 2 things, I would strongly recommend going to this place. There you will see that Haiti is not a "@#$thole," it's the "Pearl of the Antilles" of the Caribbean. A must see if you go to the north side of Haiti. The proof is in the pictures.Written 27 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rich POttawa, Canada179 contributionsWe really enjoyed our tour of the museum which had both Haitian history going back to Christopher Columbus and then the revolution. And of the sugar industry.
Would also recommend visiting the gift shop (which is air conditioned:)Written 26 November 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Most of the vendors are selling the same things and haven't seen a tourist for days. So it can be overwhelming. Still worth doing, and the architecture is great.Written 25 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Metrix1Hollywood, FL13 contributionsI first visited in 1983. It was an amazing moment to engage with nature. Haitian friends encouraged my visit and we went together. More recently, 2013 I revisited the site with my adult son and a young friend. I went to see if it still existed because a hydro power project had been planned and implemented. Fortunately, it was less spoiled than I had feared. The leap from the top takes nerve and guidance but is relatively safe, but daringly crazy too.Written 10 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - janet yEverett, MA4 contributionsIt was beautiful. The water was clear and warm. The only bad thing was how the water currents brought up a lot of discarded items onto the beach(pollution).Written 13 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
