What travellers are saying
- Wanderlust WBirmingham, UK156 contributionsBeautiful beach. Spent most of our days here
The beach vendors are most definitely a lot cheaper than hotel excursions
We staying at the Grand Bavaro Princess and Isobel the beach vendor most definitely gave the best massages.

However I really loved the fact there were plenty of beach shacks selling food and drinks.Written 3 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Many palm trees dot the landscape providing ample shade. Big resorts lie along the stretch of white sand and warm waters. There is a lot of seaweed that rolls up onto the beach. There are also pieces of coral along the shore so be careful entering the water.Written 26 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Firstly, everything needs perspective. For UK travellers, this is the cheapest long haul flight to a Caribbean island by far. The price for the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks, you can’t get Egypt, Cape Verde or Turkey. Be realistic about what you’re wishing for. If you want 5*, pay £2500pp and do it.
On arrival, the check in is slow. Rooms are allocated when you’re here so can be tedious and after a long flight frustrating. Rooms are inconsistent, but don’t create drama, if needed, just move. The hotel will accommodate.
The beach, pool and gardens are well maintained and the hotel grounds are beautiful. This is a tropical paradise that you don’t get necessarily in other Caribbean islands. The birds sing, the sun shines and of course the rain comes. That’s the beauty of this island. There’s plenty of sun beds in the day whether it’s on the beach or by the pools, entertainment in the day/night for all of the family, so enjoy.
What’s not OK. The buffet restaurant smells and the mats just aren’t changed or cleaned. The tables are cleaned but the dirty mats are placed down and reused. This is the same throughout the hotel so be cautious. I’ve seen various reviews about people being unwell. While there’s extra the hotel could do, there’s an accountability for us as guests. The amount of people that haven’t washed hands after using the toilet, touch food and then put it back and just have a disgusting basic level of hygiene is awful; that’s not the hotels fault. We’ve had a party of 6, eaten in every restaurant and no one has been unwell. There’s always something for you to eat.
I’ve been to this hotel twice in 2 years and what’s glaringly obvious is the inconsistency. You can have a drink at one bar e.g Pina Colada which is fabulous, go to another and it’s like water. The bars aren’t restocked and at times you can’t get certain drinks at certain bars which can be annoying. You hope they’d just replenish and go again, unfortunately they don’t. The food can be hit and miss at all restaurants but there’s plenty for all the family. Is it going to ruin your holiday? It didn’t for us. Again for perspective, my brother in law has the most limited food palate I know, in the UK, he eats burger, tomato pasta, margarita pizza and bacon sandwiches. He’s survived and eaten at every “al et carte”.
The hotel for me, is currently over subscribed and there’s not enough staff and/or glasses for drinking out of, specifically in an evening. Some of the staff are fabulous, others look completely disinterested. However, those that are great, are wonderful and want to do everything to make your holiday just perfect. Joanna (breakfast bar and lunch) is the kindest, happiest soul and Sulay at the pool bar is just wonderful. However, we’ve also had abrupt “no’s and can’t do’s”. This creates inconsistency that I elude to. There was a most definitely improvements that can be made, and need to be made, but are these going to ruin your holiday? For us, no.
Our room was cleaned, bar restocked and nothing touched. We didn’t use a safe, left gadgets out and nothing was misplaced or stolen. Housekeeping work long hours and cant do enough to help.
Without sounding arrogant, I would class myself as well travelled and I’d come back here again. The people that have moaned and groaned have joined the hysteria being created, instead of seeing the hotel for the beauty it provides, and putting into perspective what they’ve actually got here.
In short. It’s 3.5/4 star hotel (as advertised). It’s beautiful, it’s fairly priced, and would I come again? Yes.Written 21 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - shamwoAshford, UK218 contributionsWe had a short time here whilst on a snorkelling trip. The beach is beautiful white sand. The sealine however was rather murky due to the amount of seaweed which made it look dirty. Not sure if it was actually dirty however but was unappealing to swim in.Written 29 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Karen R.3 contributionsAfter touring the island, we went to cool off at the pool, where there was a water slide, zip lining and opportunities to go snorkeling or water skiing. The weather was gorgeous and the shops were exquisite! Lots of of opportunity to take photos, watch the natives perform and play music. I also had my passport stamped too.Written 9 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
