Wednesday 23rd May and we visited this Batey, which one of stop on our Yuma Explorer Tour, which we booked through the Tui Rep at our Hotel, Riu Palace Macao.

A Batey (sugar workers town) is a Community that exists because of and around sugar fields and the mill, it houses the sugarcane workers.

Our tour bus left the main highway and drove several miles along a track through the cane fields ending up in this remote shanty town.

As we approached residents, mainly children emerged from their huts. We were ushered in to a hut cobbled together with corrugated metal, wooden poles and other materials.

Inside there was a dirt floor with with rustic benches around where we were asked to sit.

Around the walls, floor and hanging from the ceiling were religious images and other symbols and tokens to ward off evil.

The ritual began with a group of men banging out a rhythmic beat on drums. A lady appeared in colourful robes and commenced dancing to to the beat. Incense were waved about as well as a lot of hand clapping and wailing.

We treated to a display, by the lady, of walking on glass and fire, all part of the ritual of protection from any evils of Voodoo, which is prevalent in Haiti. A bell was rung which was passed around and we all had to ring it.

The ritual came to an end with us all walking around in a circle with one hand on the shoulder of the person in front of them.

When we booked the tour the rep told us to bring some sweets or fruit for the children of the Batey, we were informed that apples were deemed a prized gift. We picked up a some apples from the hotel.

After the ritual it was time to leave, the head of the Batey collected up the treats in the front of his robe. As our coach pulled away we could see the treats being distributed to the children waiting patiently in line. It was a a thought provoking moment to see what the simple treats meant to the children, who have so little.

Having seen the primitive conditions in which this workers lived it was understandable why the Baties were referred to as ghettos or slums. The government does provide primary education for the children of workers,

We got an insight to the folklore, religious beliefs and lives of the residents of the Batey. Our Tour Guide informed us that there is well in excess of one million Haitians, mostly illegally, living in Dominican Republic. An employer can employ three Haitians for the cost of on Dominican.

Wednesday 29th May we were back at the International Airport of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, to catch or return flight to the UK.

As we waited to enter the Departure Building we spotted this colourful scaled down replica of the Airport' Control Tower. From the information board we learnt that the Tower is the first Airport Tower,in Latin America, to be transformed into a public work of art.

The work turns the control tower into a point of reference highlighting the cosmopolitan nature of tourism in the area.

Did try to take some pictures of the actual Tower from inside the Terminal, not great but gives a flavour of what it is like.
