What travellers are saying
- SNottINSingapore505 contributionsA quiet and beautiful temple with a central shrine and multiple altars/shrines around the perimeter. Signs outside most describe the god/goddess and the folklore associated. Signs are in Chinese, but translate perfectly with Google Lens on your phone. Reading the translation helps immensely to understand the temple and its gods. Few devotees at prayer. Can wear shoes and take pictures. Entry free. Next door is the Confucius Temple, which is more busy with casual visitors.Written 19 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CYL LNew York City, NY59 contributionsThis historical street is known for traditional goods, is generally blocked for pedestrian traffic so you can browse freely in the streets. During Lunar NY, the streets are decorated with lanterns, and turn into a sort of "night market" with tons of stalls (even in the morning), and it gets even more packed with tourists and locals buying goods, so it is shoulder to shoulder. I recommend going in the late morning. There are traditional activities for children such as paper cut outs and decorating red envelopes. Lots of little eats and a chance to buy traditional new years decorations and foodstuffs. Lots of tourists in the area, lining up for the "oil rice" covered in mushrooms which is very tasty(!!), and the "oyster fritters" which honestly is quite ho-hum.
tip: go on weekdays, avoid weekends at all costs unless you want to be packed like sardines going down the street!Written 20 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The guide had some good explanations about the temple and rituals. It is good to learn something from the places that you visit and this is no exception. Admire the decorations and the craftmanship that went into itWritten 13 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WorldTravellerSoonCanada384 contributionsWe arrived at Taipei Main Station and found out the underground shopping streets. It covers several city blocks and the shops are very different between zones.
The one near the Main Station is the busiest. There are shops and restaurants on both sides of the walking alley. They sell souvenirs, clothing, electronic products and accessories. Price is reasonable. Food is also quite cheap in this area.
The shopping area further away from the Main Station is of a different vibe. There are more book stores and cafes. It has a more relaxing environment.Written 26 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Its a smaller mall with a great lower-level food-court with lots of dining options.
Whilst my wife was shopping nearby, I enjoyed a Japanese Beer.Written 11 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was later the headquarters of the Taipei City Government. Contemporary art often involves installations and paintings that may seem odd.Written 28 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - macedonboyGlasgow, UK1,86,766 contributionsI visited mid afternoon and this temple was packed with people, despite the temple not being that big or even as magnificent as some of the bigger temples in the city. The temple houses two important gods. Chenghuangshen or City God is thought to protect the city walls. There’s no wall anymore and people still come to give thanks for protecting Taipei. The other popular god is Yue Lao, the Chinese God of Marriage.Written 6 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MizuhoKHino, Japan4,214 contributionsA lane just outside of Shuanglian station is a morning market. They sell vegetables, fruits, sweets, clothes and so on. Cooked food stands are limited. We bought roasted chicken and rice and ate in a small park in front of the temple. This is a compact market so it is easy to see all.Written 16 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TravelbugVietnamVietnam1,647 contributionsI had originally visited Yongle in December, but as it was a Sunday it was closed. This time I wanted a table runner made exactly the same as one I have on my dining table and had faded. I found a woman who sewed and she called a young man who turned out to be her son and spoke really good English. I showed them both the old runner and the mother suggested a particular fabric seller on the floor below. Sean, the son came with me and acted as interpreter. I couldn't believe it when I found the exact same fabric as the old runner which I had bought ready made in Shanghai years ago. We all consulted on yardage and the trimmings then we took it back to the mother to sew. I said I would pick it up a few days later. Sean offered to deliver it to my hotel and it arrived and looked perfect along with the old runner and the left over fabric. They had even included a little gift for me in the shape of a coin purse on a key ring. I loved this market and my new table runner. It was so convenient having the fabrics and the sewing people all in the one building. So if you want something copied or cushion covers or anything else you are sure to find it at Yongle marketWritten 18 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jess VenturesBritish Columbia, Canada7 contributionsThe AMA Museum was a moving, must-do experience when visiting Taipei. The staff have done an amazing job at collecting and commemorating Taiwanese comfort women. Be prepared for an emotional experience and heavy material. The staff were very welcoming and shared a lot of information with us and answered all of our questions eloquently, in English. They ensured we had enough time to appreciate the entire museum, and provided helpful recommendations for other local learning opportunities. Would highly recommend.Written 15 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, UK4,119 contributionsMuch restored and a winner of a UNESCO conservation award, this place is a hive of activity at any time of day. There are many noteworthy artifacts in the complex as well as attractive gardens and a pond packed with koi. A great place to observe Taiwanese religious rituals.Written 23 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
