This information-packed tour given by Gerard and Maureen was the highlight of my recent trip to Ireland. Gerard provided so much insight into the history - struggles and successes - of the Irish people. His wealth of knowledge gave such a depth of appreciation for the history of the country and its people. It added so much to the beauty of Ireland, much like added spices can enhance a gourmet meal.
The beauty of Ireland is well known. Its archeological sites are impressive. The tour of The Lost Valley of Uggool somehow gave life to both those things and made my trip one of the best I've ever taken - and I've travelled extensively. I thank the Bourke family for giving me the opportunity to truly experience Ireland, rather than simply visiting it.

One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to! Blue water and silver sand. Very clean and scenic in ever direction you look! If in Mayo and nearby, this is one place you won’t regret or forget! Bonus is that hardly anyone is on the beach, you basically have it to yourself!

If there was sunshine you’d think you were on a beach in some foreign exotic country. Small sandy beach with pier where children were pier jumping.
Unfortunately car park had height barrier so we couldn’t park our camper.
Surely owners of campers are also allowed enjoy the Wild Atlantic Way???

I was not confronted by anyone and very respectfully made my way to Uggool beach without causing any issues. I believe it is dreadful that anyone should claim a right to block responsible and respectful people from gaining access to a public beach. The Uggool beach is of spectacular beauty and among the finest examples of shoreline in the country.
I have heard a story that the man who owns the property that blocks access to the public beach asked the local government authorities to design and construct an access path or gate to allow a seperated access path for the public to access the public beach of Uggool, according to the rumours, the government refused to build such a path, and told the man that if he wanted such a path that he would have to to build it himself at his own expense.
So I do blame in part the neglectful attitude of the local authorities involved. Ofcourse anyone can see that the man has a dilema on his hands and that undoubtedly it was a reasonable request for him to seek help for safeguarding his sense of privacy by having the government build a seperate access path to the Uggool beach away from his private residence and at the expense of the government.
Nonetheless it does not change the fact the Uggool is a public beach as are all beaches in Ireland by law and it is not right or just to block access for the public to one of Irelands most beautiful scenic spots, despite the inconvenience it maybe to the owner of the intervening land.
There I send a personal appeal to this man, to let the bitterness which you may feel entitles to hold, to dissipate in the name of God, for it is Gods land that you are holding for ransom. I think everyone must have sympathy and understanding for the position you find yourself in, cetainly I do, but it will not stop me from, with respect, making my way to one of Irelands most beautiful places of natural beauty Uggool beach.
Kindest regards, 'Walker of the Wild'

Having spent a lot of time in Louisburgh, we always drive by this and finally went in and weren't disappointed. It is a quirky little museum but very informative and the displays were impressive for such a small place. The upstairs exhibit about the famine and the walk to Delphi is very comprehensive. My teens spent a lot of time reading (!!) and engaged in the history. We went during Covid and another family was in the video so we missed that but will do it next time! Great location to pick up brochures about the area too.

A genuine insight from contemporary accounts of the Great Hunger and what this area was like before Bord Failte and the Wild Atlantic Way tried to reduce into 'visitor experiences'.

Hard to believe some could complain the Famine Centre was dusty and needed to be "interactive". The famine wasn't a computer game on a 400-euro smartphone for Dublin 4 yuppies.

We had a beautiful experience at The Big Dipper Sauna last weekend, very well built and so clean. Paco was very friendly and helpful😊and let us stay even longer than we have booked! Relaxing, very peaceful atmosphere and probably the best view in Ireland.
I would highly recommend & we will be back for sure.

I love 'Mossies' The Bhun Abhainn. I often meet friends there. It's a fun, relaxed pub and there is often great music there.

the food was good. Louisburgh is a small but pleasant town to visit. You should keep going east along the coast, where you can see the really rural part of Ireland.

Excellent community bookshop with a very relaxed atmosphere and great selection of books particularly on Ireland, even a secondhand section.

The DooLough Valley is a beautiful, wild valley with a tragic past. During the famine, hundreds of people died here, trying to get help but were turned away. Worth visiting the memorial as well as the stunning scenery

We brought a group of 31 teenage boys to Carrowniskey for a 2hr surf lesson 🏄‍♂️. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the instructors made the experience so enjoyable! The equipment was also in excellent condition and kept us warm throughout our session. Thanks so much to the surf mayo team for looking after us. We will be back again soon 🙏.

We took the bikes for a half-day last Sunday. We were blessed with the weather. It was a peach of a day. We biked for about 25km and had a dip in the ocean en route. It was a fabulous experience. Wendy could not have been more helpful. We got very detailed instructions (though using the bikes is very simple) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We will do it again.

I visited here with my sister, I was here for the weekend and we booked onto this. From start to finish this experience was unreal. We had the best weather this year so got very lucky. Muirti and Catherine where amazing, made us feel at ease and where great teachers. They where always there if you needed help, and if not just to have a good laugh. They also took photos for us on the water and sent us them later....10/10!
If you're contemplating this...just do it!!! Can't wait to return for more sup fun x

My kids and their friends aged between 8 and 16 had a fantastic time on this camp with Griffin and Paco. It’s definitely a great way to learn to surf, SUP and handle kites. They headed off in the wind and rain every morning with a big smile and agree it was one of the best camps they have ever done. Thanks to all for a great experience. We will be back ⭐️
