Karakul Lake is a beautiful destination.
BUT! The "lead photo" shown on Tripadvisor (photo uploaded by the Australian "Karmaexplorer" in 2017 is *NOT* Karakul Lake! I don't know if "Karmaexplorer" labeled it as "Karakul Lake" when it was submitted it to Tripadvisor, or whether this was a photo management error within Tripadvisor. The very picturesque body of water shown in Karmaexplorer's photo is actually 琼块勒巴什 (variously rendered as "Qiongkuai Lebash", "Qiongkaui Lebashi", or "Qiongkuai Lebashen") On the internet you may sometimes see it informally called "Baisha Lake" (literally "White sand lake". But that name is a bit confusing since it is commonly applied to a lake in Henan province.
Like the real "Karakul Lake" in Xinjiang , Qiongkuai Lebash is also along the Karakoram Highway. Stop and take photos, but then continue on the road to the true Karakul Lake! (to add more confusion, there is also a "Karakul Lake" in Tajikistan)
Note: if you are a user of Google Maps, the "map view" of QiongKuai Lebash is quite misleading. But if you switch to the satellite view it becomes quite visible.

Also note that the Tripadvisor form did not allow me to enter the date I was actually at Karakul Lake (July 2017)

My wife and I scheduled our flight out of Kashgar in the late afternoon just so we could experience the Livestock Market. It is well worth the experience to see a real local cultural activity. All sorts of animals being sold and there is lots of good food to be had. Try the fresh noodles, you will not be disappointed.

Peaceful, green garden with Abakh Hoja mausoleum in the park. Very nice and elegant mausoleum with mysterious history and culture about Abakh Hoja family from ancient Kashgar. Enjoy the long history and exquisite mosques, beautiful architecture and Uygur dance, it was definitely worth visiting.

For years I’ve wanted to see Western China, and saw myself walking through the old towns of Kashgar. I kept telling myself it will always be there, but forgotten the world is changing rapidly, especially China. Kashgar was the supposed highlight of my trip, for weeks through our travel, I couldn’t contain my excitement for finally making my way to Xinjiang. And I realized I was 10 years too late and was disappointed with myself for taking so long as the ancient town was completely razed and left just rubbles, and in its place stood a Disneyfied replica of it and glossed over with the state’s version of the indigenous culture. It wasn’t just the city that was demolished, it took with it the Uigher’s history and heritage. Bureaucratic flex by the Chinese government are palpable throughout Kashgar and the region: Chinese propaganda at every corner, dozens of checkpoints and cameras, influx of Hans diluting the Uigher’s population, and the ever presence of police had the whole region felt like it was under martial law, especially in Kashgar. The real Kashgar is gone for most part. I’ve sadly missed the boat, and in its place the sanitized vision of it by the Chinese government that didn’t satisfy what I went looking for.

Tips: The Original ancient city is like a km outside of the city, across from the local bazaar. It’s mostly razed, but you could still walk around the perimeter of it. Just don’t wear your favorite shoes you wouldn’t want to have a hard time cleaning dust and sand off it.

Enjoyed wandering the streets around here day and night at night the place really comes alive and the food court opens.
There are stalls selling the usual tourist items aimed mainly at Chinese visitors from around the country and well as all different foods, sheeps head, trotters, insects as well as more normal for us, shwarma, kebabs.
Good place to pick up something cheap to eat and watch the world go by

The mosque is good the visit, not as impressive as the mausoleum but still worth it. Visit also the gardens around the mosque.

This is part of a spectacular mountain range, the longest in Asia. Based on all the tourist buses we saw, it appears to be a fairly popular location.

As of late July 2021, foreigners are limited to where they can visit outside of Kashgar. Tashkorgan was closed to foreigners. Shipton’s Arch was closed to all visitors, something to do with the weather. I settled on Oytagh as there were no other options out of town. A great day trip, well worth the visit. With checkpoints and travel, it took 3 hours to arrive. I suggest going early to avoid crowds. We left at 8am and we amongst the first visitors. Keeping to the main path offered great views of the surrounding valley, mountains and glacier. If you’re up for a hike, try taking the side path just past the grassland on the way up, to the right. A stone path leads to the top of the ridge with a spectacular view. It was pricey for a single traveler, but with so few options, worth it to me. You can contact the tourist service center for information or other tours on offer.

The drive up to the checkpoint is beautiful and interesting. Unfortunately the checkpoint has been pushed further down the mountain on the Chinese side. The reason our Uighur tour guide gave was that because of US drone bombings on the Pakistan side the level of security has had to increase and the Chinese can no longer allow casual visitors access to the actual border.

There is a sector with hats - including furry ones with ear flaps -, ceramics, woodcarving, metalworking, traditional musical instruments, textiles, carpets, foodstuffs, etc. The greatest find was the One Hundred Year Teahouse located on the second story of a building on the lefthand side of the street (walking from the mosque). Locals play traditional music and sing and dance spontaneously on the balcony. You are encouraged to join in.
