It's tough to get there from Nara but if you're Not scared of taking 3 trains/ busses after each other, you are rewarded with fresh air, no foreign tourists and Dorogawa Onsen Town.

Also - best Tofu ever and a wonderful hiking trail with bathing Options.

Compare with another limestone caves in Europe, this place is quite small but pretty. The most impressive thing is truck train!! Very original and thrilling because there are no guard rails so be careful not fall down!!

The Japanese style of garden (with mini arched bridges and lanterns) and the surrounding area of the shrine complex is beautiful with maple (all fiery colours) and ginko trees scattered here and there. There's trout swimming in the large ponds and the water coming from beneath (out of?) the mountain is crystal clear (except when it's right after a typhoon, which is when we happened to visit the temple - which, just gives us all the more reason to go back again, one clear sunny day). There's an interesting statue of a (Chinese?) monk with a dragon emerging from his back, by the sacred water. There are many unique statues placed around the grounds, the likes of which I've never seen before. The main pond features a mini mountain with a statue of En-no-Gyojya (the founder of Shugendo Buddhism) and a dragon spurting sacred water (probably used in certain ceremonies ... ???) which was fascinating.
Ryusen-ji Temple is the ceremonial site for opening (in May) and closing (in September) the mountain path to Mt. Omine (1719 metres). It's where climbers can cleanse their spirit before making the hallowed climb to the summit. Traditionally women were not allowed to climb this mountain and are still discouraged from doing so (which is nice that they're trying hard to preserve a 1300 year-old tradition). They say women tend to be a distraction for the monks (perhaps many feminists may feel the need to cry out such unfairness; then shouldn't the men concentrate harder on their spiritual practice ...) yet not to worry, there is a mountain reserved only for women nearby (so, they won't get distracted by men).
To get to the suspension bridge nearby, it's only about 300-400m walk up the hill (and the mountain's vegetation is totally natural, nothing has been planted by man, at all). The green netting pretty much covering the entire bridge is disappointing - there's no thrill left at all. You can get a nice view of Dorogawa Onsen town thru the expanded holes, though ...
The shrine looks newly painted and well-kept - it must prove challenging with so many trees dropping leaves everywhere, in autumn. There is a free carpark off to the side and clean public toilets out front, by the river. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in town.

If you're not around Dorogawa Onsen town, then it's not worth a special trip, unless you want to hike or see Ryusenji Temple (worth seeing) as well. It's about 300-400m climb up the hill from the temple. It's uphill all the way but, it's not that exhausting. There's a rough path, as the mountain has been kept totally natural. Nothing has been planted by man, which is quite a rare thing, nowadays. The green netting covering pretty much the entire suspension bridge is disappointing. There's not much of a thrill feeling totally safe ... no cracks or missing boards underneath our feet either. You can get a pretty good view of the whole town thru the expanded holes, though ...
If you keep walking thru the woods (the path looks easy to follow), you will eventually get (20-30 mins) to the eco-museum ... which would probably make a pleasant walk on a sunny day. The suspension bridge itself it not that exciting ...
