- marcFrance37 contributionsAbout 4 days spend trekking through the jungle, forest, tea fields and grasslands, full of land leeches, the journey as well as the views were much worth it. It was gorgeous the whole way with the views of the environment constantly changing until we made it to the summit of the hike. Would for sure hire a local guide as they know how to get to and from the campsites that ate gated because of the tigers, elephants, and other creatures that may be destructive to us humans.Written 12 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You need to be reasonably fit as some parts are steep at beginning and as you near the peak but mostly it's rolling hills. The vistas are just gorgeous. The hike can take anywhere between 3 to 5 hours depending on one's speed of climbing, but going slow to take in the beautiful views is desirable. We spotted a herd of Nilgiri Tahr and a green vine snake on the way.
Make sure you reach the forest office at Munnar by 2pm the previous day to collect your trek permit and you book your trek and accommodation online prior to that. After that, it's the department's responsibility to take you to your lodgings by their Jeep and allot you a guide for the hike
Recommend staying at the Rhodo Mansion as the trek starts right behind it. Accomodation at the Rhodo Mansion is basic, but very clean, though upkeep can be improved (broken glass pane on the bathroom ventilator). The caretaker and cook are hospitable, food is freshly prepared and tasty - again basic, nothing fancy.Written 9 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Praveen NPChennai (Madras), India2 contributionsOne of the best treks I've ever had yet. The trail to the top is comparatively easy to the downhill. The best part is the mini puddle of water at the peak. Loved that taste 😍. Do start before 5.30 to get an excellent sunrise view. Nevertheless, the view as we go top is breath-taking. We also came across a couple of bison on our way to the base camp. You can reach the base camp with a private vehicle too. Entry is 400 at the base camp. You can get water bottles too, at the base camp. They will provide a local guide too. It takes almost 7-8 hours to complete the trek. Do carry some source of food (My two cents: chocolates, bread and jam, orange and banana for instant energy). Carry atleast 1 litre of water. Please don't litter the place. Happy trekking.
No need for an extra permit or guide.Written 6 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AZCasualTravelerMesa, AZ2,436 contributionsThe Ottakathalamedu (Ottakathala-Medu) Mountain Range is a beautiful scenic area that has large tea leave plantations and various view points in the area that are great for scenic photos. Our small tour group utilized the services of one of several Jeep tour services that were in town near our Resort (Kumily, India). The scenery at this mountain range - the Ottakathalamedu Viewpoints and lavish tea gardens - was excellent, definitely worth the trip.Written 22 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
