What travellers are saying
- triptogoNew York111 contributionsDefinitely worth the bus ride. We took the bus from Miyazaki station west side at bus stop #1 and bus #965. The fare is 1510yen each way, but you can get the All Day Kotsu bus pass at the tourist office in the station for 2000yen. They will ask to see your passport and it is cash only. At the time of this writing you can download the app and get it for 1800 yen till September 30, 2023. Get the bus schedule from the office. There are only few buses for return. With proper planning, you can use the bus pass from Miyazaki station to Aoshima, Udo shrine, and Obi city with the return using JR train from Obi to Miyazaki(950yen). One of best part of the bus ride is the section from Aoshima to Udo shrine. Take the seat on the left side and enjoy the costal view. Shortly after you pass Aoshima you will be greeted with the amazing view of the ‘devil’s washboard’. We visited Aoshima and Udo in the rain and it was still a great view. I am sure on a sunny day the view will be even better. Oh there are no restaurants at Udo shrine but there is a lovely coffee shop and they sell cream puffs.Written 6 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Henry FChicago, IL569 contributionsThere is much history here. The remains of the castle are impressive, the museum has fascinating old costumes and crafts, though it is small. Perhaps the most lovely aspect are the wonderful gardens that surround the site. Beautiful greenery, gorgeously manicured, make this a beautiful visit.Written 25 December 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JinjjaDaebakkSingapore, Singapore167 contributionsThe coast line is very famous because it's formation looks like a washboard and has been named the devil's washboard. There is an observatory just opposite the car-park. You can walk down some stairs to the coastline for a closer look. The sea is breathtaking.
As we drove away from the area we were literally a few feet from the beautiful coastline. Great place to take photographs and to appreciate nature.Written 14 January 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. When the bus dropped us off at the Obi-jo bus stop, we had no clear idea which direction to walk to get to the castle and the historic district. There was no tourist office in sight and we had no maps. The bus station man pointed us towards the right to Otemon-dori, the street which climbs to the castle. A Family Mart is conveniently located on the main street just a few paces beyond the street up the hill. It was about a fifteen minute walk from the bus station to the castle and the main historic area.
The hill road is easy to recognize once you are at the intersection due to the numerous tourists, many slow moving family cars, and several tour buses. The road is lined with fine old houses and kura, all atop stone and mud walls many with flowering shrubs and other plantings overhanging the walkway. This is your introduction to the historic buildings, which multiply the higher up you walk.
At the top of the hill is a small path on the left to one of the samurai residences where you can purchase a combination ticket to all seven (¥610). Or you can go straight to Otemon, the main gate into the castle grounds. Or turn right, follow the tree-lined canal while you look at the few swimming koi, and wander aimlessly amongst the historic buildings.
We were in Obi in koyo season - many trees were showing their bright colors and even some late roses were blooming. In addition, palm trees graced several of the properties. Many of the old houses are presently private residences tucked behind protective walls, but you can still get a sense of what life once was like in this former castle and merchant town. The streets meander amongst residences and warehouses, many of which are now cafes, museums, or craft shops. We saw one rickshaw on hire and we watched a family pile into it. We were the only Western tourists there on a Sunday afternoon, but the town was full of Japanese tourists, including many families out for an afternoon stroll or bicycle ride.
Obi may not be undiscovered by foreign visitors for long. It is definitely worth a visit now, before it really becomes overridden by tourists.Written 4 May 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Not many were blooming, the trees had been ravished during the Typhoon last fall. Groundskeeper were working to shore up Jacalanda trees- it must be a beautiful site, sky, sea, and sparkling blue flowers.
Large Michi-no-Eki ( visit the free botanical greenhouse ) where they were selling Jacalanda plants outside.
You could spend a nice picnic afternoon here.Written 6 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - OISEAU_KSeoul, South Korea1,654 contributionsQuiet, clean, graceful town I ever saw so far. Not many tourists, I guess it is a bit less known compare to Udo shrine or Seunmesse, but I liked the most in Nichina coast area. Well, it is really small place, do not expect glamourous thing. It is good enough to enjoy, ancient times Japan aroun 16 century or 18 century. There is a shrine behind the Obi castle, it seems there is nobody to take care of. That was also exhautic. One of school girl said to me, a tourist, "Gonnichiwa" as soon as she sees me. It was very sweet. There are quite many monuments where you can visit free. Some of them became kindergatern or elementary school. They learn history in their surroundings.Written 5 July 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- OISEAU_KSeoul, South Korea1,654 contributionsObi castle area is a bit far from Miyazaki, I should have started my tour from Obi, Udo Shrine andSun Messe. Due to the lack of time, i could not spend enough time there. The old and small allies were full of original houses from 18, 19th centry. So well preserved! Very beautiful, graceful, and calm. I really liked the village. However, it is not easy to tell to go there, because its location is a bit far, its size of town is quite small. But if you want to feel real Japanese ancient times even if it is short moment, why not!Written 30 June 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bglhvnSo. California1,195 contributionsWe toured this house with a guide, shoes removed, so it was much more interesting than if we had simply done it ourselves. It was difficult to recognize that this house was recreated and not the original building.Written 2 November 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
