Church from 1643, entrance fee written on the door. Parking on the road at the foot of the hill on which the church stands. On the door there is the telephone number of the caretaker to call to visit it. But we didn't want to wait, so we took a look at the church and the cemetery from outside and went to the next one. It's also beautiful from the outside, but in the summer I would make sure to keep it open at set times, because the influx of tourists is notable, while we were leaving another 2 families of 4 people each arrived.

You can hardly miss this church in Budestie. It is located right in the center. Beautifully situated, like many of these churches, surrounded by a multitude of graves. Recent and older. You can call a number and in principle someone will come to open the church. Unfortunately not possible now. There was a holiday in the village and both the key keeper and the priest were there. So unfortunately we couldn't go in. Because of the festival we saw many residents of the village passing by in traditional costumes. Also something special.

One of highlights of the trip to Maramures- once again a bit disappointed - the church of Budesti - Josani built in the mid 16 hundreds - a beautiful architectural piece and part of the UNESCO world heritage since 1999. (1 of those 8 churches on the UNESCO list ).
It is one of the "old churches" - originally was a Catholic church and was "transferred" to the Orthodox church in the 1940's ... the stepped roof and the internal decorations (similar with those of Scandinavia is no random resemblance ... but that's a different story ) ... are some of the characteristics you will see in these "old churches" (I keep repeating the word "old" only because you need to make a difference between the churches that were built before 1900 and after 1989 (in between is strange period, 2 World Wars, Communism in Romania, etc. .....)).
This particular church has also a very interesting artifact inside - the chainmail of Pintea (Grigore ) "The Brave" , Captain in the Army of Ferenc Rakoczi II and -the legend say's - famous outlaw (that's how he entered in the history books) , so the chainmail that is exposed in the church is a gift from Pintea himself - however is worn in skirmishes with the tartars it was not worn in the battle of Baia Mare in 1717 since Pintea was shot to death in Baia Mare in 1703 (so just a minor slip there - nice legend still).
When we were - and arrive like 20 minutes before the visiting hours were over we were not lucky - there was phone number that on display, I've been ringing no one picked up .. pity I would have loved to see the insides also ... next time.
So when you are there, go and visit it is an interesting place.

The UNESCO heritage wooden church of Budesti Josani was also under a process of renovation.
But the true progress can be seen outside the church fence on the main street of the village. There are new administration buildings, including a huge tourist information center. Seven years ago the down street surroundings environment was more adequate with the old church.
Any how this church is more remarkable than the others wooden churches from Maramures because here we have displayed part of the Pintea’s chainmail shirt. Pintea is the most important hero of the historical area of Maramures.
That’s why visiting the Budesti Josani wooden church is a must.

We came to this church a bit early, but we were lucky, because a bus if scholars had arrived some minutes before and the church was open, so we could see the interior. Both, exterior and interior are just wonderful.
