Thanks to Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and Jeju Olle walking Festival, we got an opportunity to participate in the Jeju Olle Walking festival 2020 despite there was a limitation on the number of the participant due to spread of Covid-19. This year, the festival is held in a new and unique way with the slogan “Walk Apart, Finish Together”. All participants have to register online in advance; only up to 15 participants accepted for each of 23 routes for 23 days. Also, all the participants were given Clean Kit set that includes face masks, sanitizers, and others needed for personal hygiene.
Since we had just one day to participate in the walking festival, Route 10 was chosen for our team. Route 10 start from Hwasun Golden sand beach, then passes through major touristic attractions Sanbangsan Mountain, Yongmeori Coast, Songaksan Mountain, Altteureu Airfield, Victims Memorials, and finally Hamo beach which is close to the endpoint. The total distance is 15.6 km with a maximum elevation of around 60 m.
The walking experience in this route was amazing. We pass various landscapes, from beaches to forest, coastal walk to mountain hiking, and finally to radish and potato farms at Altteureu Airfield site. The various volcanic and sedimentary rock structures at Sanbangsan Mountain foothills and Yongmeori Coast were amazingly gorgeous. Walking along the perimeter of volcanic mountain Songaksan was a unique experience. The cliffs of the mountain close to sea were spectacular and walking along the top of those cliffs was just amusing.
This type of walking, I think, gives the opportunity to explore the hidden natural beauty of Jeju Island and its traditional cultures which we could miss if visited by other means. Thus, the Jeju Olle Trails is highly recommended for those who love hiking or walking and want to explore hidden natural beauties while enjoying local customs and local foods. I, personally, wish to complete all the Olle walking trails and get the certificate of completion from the organizer.

We finished the route #10 (17.5KM) in about 5 hours (we walked pretty slowly and took a lot of pictures). The whole experience was unforgettable. The magnificent view of the ocean on the left and mountain on the right was amazing. I thought it would be hard since I'm not that much used to walking for long hours but it didn't feel exhausting at all. Every sight was so gorgeous that I just didn't want to leave. I felt very fresh and relaxed after the walk. Even the tiredness after it was finished was worth all of those pretty shots I took and the healing. STRONGLY RECOMMEND!

I completed every single course over a period of a year so the following comments are just my opinions. If you are staying for a short period of time in Jeju courses 6 and 7 are the most popular and will probably get the most from. Both are very scenic and you will get to see some of the major sights. If you start at one of the information sites, you can pick up a Jeju Olle guide which has maps and information of the trails, guides for the Buses, to get to and from the starting points. Also I'd recommend downloading Kakao Maps app on your phone and you can zoom in and see the actual trail that you are following when you are on it. It comes in handy especially for me when I made a wrong turn on my trips. If your doing the entire course I'd recommend buying a jeju Olle Passport. Carry it with you and get it stamped at the starting points and halfway way points of the trails. I was living near jeju city and caught most of Buses from the Jeju inter city bus centre. The 101/201 express buses will take you to/ or near a lot of the starting points but I'd recommend picking up the Olle Guide first and the info in that is invaluable.
Most of the Starting points are close to the roads unless you are going to one of the 3 islands. I used booking.com most of the time to book places to stay overnight as I don't speak Korean. Jeju has a lot of places to stay and there would be abundant places to stay except for maybe a couple of the more remote locations on the trail. There are offical Olle trail Hostels throughout the trails to which are very nice. If planning for no Korean speakers just check before hand that you are not traveling on a Jeju holiday as a lot of paces close down and might be harder to find a place to stay. Of course take plenty of water and there's usually 7/11 of CV's around the place where you can get snacks to eat.
The trails themselves are very beautiful , Different scenes ranging from Black volcanic rock on the coastlines, Forest trails, Beautiful beaches, Hill sides, a lot of Oreums (Jeju extinct volcanoes) small towns with a chance to see wildlife and a lot of friendly people. For myself my favourite trails were routes 11, 18-1 Chuja-Do island), 1-1 (Udo island), 7. For me the stronger trails were on the southern eastern point of the island starting from route 6 through to 15.
Getting to the supporting islands it you might take note you will need your Passport to catch the ferry to Udo. You must show it when buying a ticket. There are a lot of ferries going most of the day to Udo. They have a very nice Peanut ice cream there. The smaller island Gapado at the time I went there were only 2 ferries in the day and its not the most reliable service and the ferries can be cancelled due to bad weather can be cancelled due to bad weather so check beforehand if you can. Chuja-Do island was one of my favourites. When I done it they had 2 ferries a day and you can not do the whole trail in time to catch the next ferry back so be prepared to stay over night. I have heard of instances when the weather turned bad and people had to stay a couple of nights on the island because the ferries were cancelled so just plan for that just in case. it is a beautiful Island though and one of my favourites.
I would also recommend going and joining the Olle Walkers Facebook group. They take guided walks along certain courses and have great information about weather and so forth. all you need to do is contribute to the group from time to time.

Apr 2017 • Friends
We did 3 Jeju Olle Route 1, 6 & 7 and 14-1. We did not complete all the Olle route but every one of the route was breath-taking and worth the walk. All the route were doable by public transport and car rental was not needed.
Jeju Olle Route 1
We did not do the entire route 1 as we wanted to visit seongsan 1st plus we started late. As we stayed at Seowipo, near to the seogwipo-si (former) intercity bus terminal, we took bus 701 to Seongsan ilchulbong. The bus journey took more than 1.5hours and cost about 3300won one way and the bus driver could provide change if needed. There was a TV screen at the front of the bus that will flash and announce the current and coming stop in english clearly. The TV screen will flash seongsan-ri entrance and you can press the bell to alight (photo attached). Just to note that the bus ride can be a nausea one as the driver usually travel at a high speed as there were many stops they need to embark on. I have car sickness but it was still bearable for me.
We alighted and headed to the black beach along Seongsan. It was called the black beach as the sand was black. Not sure why we need not need to pay for the entrance fee to Seongsan that day (25th April) but we were happy as the temperature was about 17 degree Celsius. We wore T-shirt with a windbreaker only as the sun kept us warm. A windbreaker will be good as it can be quite windy especially if you walk along the beach. There were 2 track at Seongsan. One track led to the peak of Seongsan which consist about 10 flights of stairs (Pretty doable even with poor fitness – just take as many rest breaks as needed). At the peak, you will be able to have a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding water bodies. The other track is along the coast area with pretty wild purple (I think is Lunaria annua) and yellow canola wild flower and volcanic stacked rocks.
After Seongsan, you can continue to the Jeju Olle Route 1 to Al Oreum along the ocean area. The Jeju Olle Route 1 will pass by canola flower patches for photo taking, a nice ocean view with beaches for scenic viewing, a new hotel named as The Cloud, the ferry terminal, along many beautiful seashore. We stopped at one of the seashore where we witness locals harvesting gastropod, sword razor clams and cockles using simple equipment. We were friendly and allowed us to take photo of how they harvest sword razor clams. If you are interesting in harvesting, remember to bring a good jacket as the wind was strong in April. Putting on waterproof boots will be good too. We continued to walk along the coast where cuttlefish were being dried along the coast. There were many restaurants along the way too. As we continued the walk, we noted that there was no bus stop along the walk after the fish port/market (there was a Ojo Haenyeo House bus stop). The next bus stop was at Jongdal Elementary school which was quite a distance away.
After walking through the coastal area, you will walk through a village for a short period before reaching the expressway. The walk towards Al Oreum required you to cross an expressway and the route up the Al Oreum seemed alittle deserted with trees but there was still a road up. You will contine to see the orange/blue ribbons that were well spaced. However, we started the walk at 1pm and took too many stops for picture taking. Therefore, we were unable to finish the walk to Al Oreum.
We decided to back track and took bus 701 from the Jongdal Elementary school stop at about 5.30 pm back to the seogwipo-si (former) intercity bus terminal (we take on the side nearer to the expressway, not the opposite). Therefore, make sure you start the Olle route earlier if you want to reach the top of Al Oreum where you will have a bird-eye view of the paddy field and coastal area. The bus journey took about 2 hours to reach Seogwipo-si.
Jeju Olle Route 6 & 7
We did not do the entire 6 & 7 trail but we visited Chilshimni Poetry Park, Hwangwooji coast, Oedolgae observatory and Oedolgae. This was a scenic trail and I highly recommend.
We stayed at a hotel along Jungang-ro road, that was near the Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market. From our hotel, it was a 10 minutes walk to Geolmae Eco Park. The park led us along Seohong-ro road to Taepyeong-to road (where we passed by Hotel Yeon) where we were able to see the Saeyeong Bridge. After the bridge was in sight, we followed our instinct to the Bridge.
There was an ice-cream stall that serve grape soft-serve that was delicious. We made our way onto the bridge to view the pristine bluish-green coastline and headed to Saeseom Island. Saeseom Island was a short 20 to 30 minutes trail that brought us to a rocky coastline where you can view two lighthouses (red and white). You could walk to the white lighthouse on the rocks but at your own risk. There were many locals fishing along the rocky areas too.
In short, the trail along the Saeyeongyo Bridge was fairly easy yet scenic enough. We were there on the 22nd of April and the weather was about 15 degree Celsius in the day. A light jacket with windbreak will be sufficient.
Afterwhich we headed to Chilshimni Poetry Park (which you can view Cheonjiyeon Falls for free) as there was a stairway along the left side of main exit road (where all the tour buses parked, pedestrian walkway path with brown wood). The stairway seemed to indicate going up a temple. However, we landed in Chilshimni Poetry Park. We took pictures of the waterfall and left Chilshimni Poetry Park to follow the orange/blue Jeju Olle ribbon to Hwangwooji coast and Oedolgae. The orange/blue Jeju Olle ribbon were along the park main road (Namseongjung-ro road where Park Sunshine hotel was). Then, You need to turn in to Namseong-ro road and you will see a brick wall painted dark blue with pinnochio seated on a bench (photo attached) you will passed by a “hip”외돌개나라 Hostel (the hostel name is in Korean as I cannot find the English name online - photo attached). u will then past by Poong Gyung Hotel in Jeju (not the one u can find online - photo attached) before arriving at Hwangwooji coast. I love Hwangwooji coast bcos it was like a private pool. There were only a few Korean that day, playing, swimming and hunting of sea creatures in the private pool. It also has a good view of the Saeyeongyo Bridge from a far. After-which we head to Oedolgae and walked till Dombenang-gil Road. We decided to head back as I needed the toilet. At the entrance to Oedolgae, there was a public toilet acorss the road. The toilet were will keep with toilet paper provided. You can watch the sunset if you have time. However, we decided to walk back to our hotel as we were tire.
Jeju Olle Route 14 – 1
If you love beaches, this is a must walk route (at least it was really breathe-taking for me). We stayed at Seowipo, we took bus 110 from Jungang Rotary bus stop to Jungmun Tourist Complex. The bus journey about 30 minutes and cost less than 2000won one way. The bus driver could provide change if needed. There was a TV screen at the front of the bus that will flash and announce the current and coming stop in english clearly (Although I did not see Jungmun Tourist Complex on the TV screen, therefore I used GPS to locate instead. You can press the bell to alight. For my other bus trip, the stops were announced correctly and was reliable). We actually stopped that Jungmun Tourist Complex to go the the Teddy bear museum and Cheonjeyeon Falls before proceeding to the beach. Just to note that the bus ride can be a nausea one as the driver usually travel at a high speed as there were many stops they need to embark on.
We needed to change bus 702 (opposite the tourist infrmation counter) to Hyeojae beach. It cost 3300 won. The journey on the bus we great as you will pass by paddy field, wind mills and wild flower fields (photo attached). You will see a beautiful beach 1st (Geumneung Beach) but don’t get down, get down at Hyeopjae beach as the view is nicer (about 2 stops away). You can walk down to Geumneung Beach later as it was part of olle route 14-1 (There is a public toilet down the stretch if you need). The weather then (April 26) was 12 to 17 degree Celcius and remember to buy a jacket and windbreaker as it was very windy when we were there. We so blessed that the sky cleared up to reveal one of the most beautiful turquoise beaches I have been. The beach was wide and the colours of the water clear and blue. There are many café where you can buy a hot drink from. Noted that the café only allow you to use the toilet if you buy a drink (the receipt will print the password to get into the toilet). You can always use the public toilet.
We decide to walk along the orange and blue ribbon trail (Jeju Olle Route 14) and it was one of the best trail for me. We complete only part of the the trail where we walk through the villages to the fishing port. The route will bring you to a serene path with light house and the wind mills. The the path became rocky nearing the windmills, and we decided to walk out through the rocky back alley of a shellfish place (away from the orange/blue ribbon) and landed at a bus stop. We took bus 702 back to seogwipo.
It was a must go beach but only on a clear blue day where the magnificent of the beach will show up.
In Summary, I always thought that you would need to rent a car around jeju. However, during my 4 days trip (even Hallasan was done using public transport – can look at my post at tripadvisor), all our travelling was done throuh public transport. We were able to view those usual scenic places that ple usually go too! The good thing about walking was that we could stop at anytime we want to take picture or do something we did not plan for (Eg: watch how the local harvest shellfish). However, we were the kind that love to walk and could spend 7 hours walking. Therefore, we could travel in jeju with a budget using their public transport.

Jeju Olle Trail is completely round the island broken up into 21 different routes.
In total we walked about 13km, about 3.5 to 4 hours time taken. Photography time included.
We started our walk from Hyatt Jeju along the Jungmun Beach (we did Route 8 going eastwards) heading towards the Daepo Pego (port) and ended our walk at the Yakcheon Temple.
Ensure that you look out for arrows (blue&orange) along the ground and olle trail ribbons (blue & orange as well) tying on trees along the way. Terrain is very varied, from easy tarmac lanes to quite difficult lava rocks along the bays.
Suggest you wear proper walking shoes. Bring along your own water & snacks. There are a few restrooms along the way.
If you are staying around Jungmun resort area (many hotels there), take airport bus limousine no 600 to go back to your hotel. Its about 1000 Korean Won per person.
Overall is an interesting walk because you will see village, seaside, port & temple along the way. This is one of the very popular walk in Jeju, so its like a "must walk" walk..
We just did a short segment of the Olle Trail & apparently other segments are even more interesting.. Check out some photos for illustration.

Due to the fact that I only had six days in Jeju, I decided to do various scenic sections of the different Olle Trails.
Olle Trail 5
We took bus 201 and stopped at Dongbu Health Centre and began walking the scenic Namwon Keuneong Coastal Trail starting from Kumho Resort. It was a short (about 1.5 km), easy and shady trail with many spectacular views of the white waves crashing on the black volcanic rocky cliffs. There is toilet facilities along the way.
Olle Trail 6
I only had time for the city stretch namely the Lee Jung Seop Street back to Olle Main Head Office. Our hotel is only a few doors away and this location is very convenient.
Olle Trail 7
After viewing Oedolgae Rock, we walked the very scenic coastal trail with the seaview on the left and beautiful houses on the right. There are some steps along this stretch. I had a very pleasant surprise when I reached the pretty cafe 60beans with its scenic, peaceful outdoor seatings too. The interior of the cafe is also beautifully decorated, very ideal for a coffee break. This walk is extremely beautiful and I exited from the Olle Trail 7 here by walking about 15 mins to the bus stop at main road to take bus 201 back to Seogwipo city. etc,
Olle Trail 8
We only walked a small section starting from Jusangjeolli Cliff to the park after it.
Olle Trail 10
Another one of my favourite is the walk around the perimeter of Songaksan Mountain.
I saw several islands such as the flat Gapado. Also fascinating to see the many caves hidden among the cliff side of the mountain. There is also a field meadow with 2 horses grazing. Another section has lots of pine trees. There are some steps involved here. Fortunately it is a circular route and I could take my lunch at the many cafes near to carpark. There are toilet facilities at the start and end of the trail. I took a taxi here as the bus does not travel here frequently.
Olle Trail 15B
I walked the easy seaside coastal trail from Gwakji beach to Aewol to have lunch at Nolman and coffee at Bomnal. There are many black volcanic rock formations to see along this trail.
Olle Trail 17
I started the walk at the Iho Tewoo Beach with its red and white horse lighthouses. Continuing on the coast, I could see many locals relaxing in their tents and food and games having great family bonding time. I finally too bus 445 to go to Dongmun market. Pleasantly surprised that this bus passes by the coastal Jeju Olle route such as the Dobu-dong Rainbow coastal trail.
Olle Trail 18
I only had time to do a small section by the Sanji stream next to Dongmun market.
Hayoung Olle Trail 1
The Hayoung Olle Trails are three walking paths in downtown Seogwipo. “Hayoung” is the Jeju language word for abundance. I walked the section from Cheonyiyeon waterfall to Saeyeongyo Bridge followed by Saeseom Islet. This is also an excellent walk as the short route around the island is very scenic.

A way to escape from daily hectic life. You can walk at your own pace and choose the route and scenery you like (coastal road, hiking). I completed Route 1, 1-1, 20, part of route 6 & 7. Just choose the route and follow the olle sign, relax and enjoy the view Olle wanna show you. Is quite safe, I am a girl and I walked alone.

I walked Routes 6 and 7 on 23rd-24th Oct 2017. The distance was 15km and 18km respectively. The weather was perfect - sunshine and cool breezes. These 2 routes are reputed to be the more beautiful ones. There are a couple of picture-perfect waterfalls and breath-taking shorelines along the way. 2,000Won per entry is charged for the waterfall. Along the way are small fishing ports where one can get to taste local seafood. There are small cafe along the way too, where one can sit, relax and taking in the beautiful scenery. Coffee is +/-4,000won. As I was staying at the starting point, from the finishing point I took taxi back It costs about 8kWon. Oh yes, there are clean restrooms every 5km or so.
Just a little minus point, the blue & red ribbon is not easy to be found in urban area. So try looking for the blue line on the tar road.

We went there by taxi. Only did part of it for about 2.5 hours. Beautiful though it was sleeting and very windy. Enjoyed taking pictures. Would like to come back and spend the whole day. It must very pretty in Autumn.

If you enjoy nature, hiking one of the olle trails is a must-do while you're in jeju. It will not be an easy hike and not all parts of the trail are scenic but there are sufficient sights to blow you away and be left in awe of nature. This is also the best way to experience jeju's natural beauty (after all this is what its most famous for and not for teddy bears). It is also arguably the least touristy thing to do during your trip here. You can do as long or as short of the trails as you like; there are trails passing through hot tourist destinations where you'll see many tourist buses, local villages, rice fields, even resorts. You'll walk on sand, on rocks by the ocean, and if you time it correctly you'll be able to catch a gorgeous sunset along jeju's coastline. Be sure not to get stuck in a remote area after sunset as it can be difficult to get out. If you're doing a multi-day hike, there are many pensions located along the olle routes and you can just pop in for a night.
Suggest to go with at least one other person in case you get lost (there are some places where the markings are not so visible/well maintained). If you rented a car, dont drive. Wear comfortable shoes and bring lots of water and snacks!

Hi, I plan to go for trail 6 on April 2020. Do you know if where should I park my car? How long it takes to finish trail 6? Is the weather windy? Thank you.

If I plan to drive around Jeju, what is the most practical way to get on the Olle trails?
Written 20 May 2019
Most of the Olle trails are close to the coast so if you find a place to park the car it will be pretty close from where you can start from. the only thing is most of the trails would take about 4 hours and don't go in loops so you will have to either walk back to your car or take a bus back to where you started. If you do that then I'd recommend buying a T-Money card to use on the Bus. You can buy them at the airport or 7/11s

Hi, my friend and I are going to Jeju in March and plan to do the olle trails. Instead of moving from one accomodation to another everyday, which are the routes that allow us to combine like 2 to 3 routes but staying put in one accommodation.

Hi. How do i go these trails? I couldnt find ahy information about that. Im planning to stay at the jeju city, nearby the airport.

How many hours does it take to complete the shorter trails? Thanks :)

For Olle Festival, one route per day, when start to walk before 9 am, able to arrive the lunch place before noon and finish the route before 4-5 pm. For solo walk, basically, you can stop your journey at anytime, i used to take a cup of coffee first and design to ho ahead or turn out to some other attractive place. eg On Udo Island so far i did not complete the route there but enjoyed more on their beaches.

Hello Jim,
I am thinking of walking the entire Jeju Olle Trail in 2018. I live in Canada, close to the Jeju Olle Friendship Trail that is part of the Bruce Trail.
To do the entire 200k, how much time would you suggest I allow? I hike quickly but am there to smell the roses, not race the course.
What time of year would you suggest it is best to hike it? I would prefer drier, warmer conditions but would also like to avoid the big tourist rush if there is one.
Is it necessary to book the accommodations you mention above in advance?
I look forward to your responses.
Nicola

Hello, It's 425km not 200km.. It will take 17~20 days depends on condition. :)
I would recommed you to walk Middle of March to Middle of May or Middle of September to End of October.
Hope it is helpful for you.

Hi, I am looking at spending probably a week walking the trails at the end of March. I realise it will still be cold and I'm OK with that. I was wondering if its easy to just walk in to the pensions and get a bed for the night? I don't really want to have to keep getting buses to and fro from accomodation and would like to just walk, stay, walk on stay somewhere else the next night. Is that possible do you think??

Hi Jenny, this is Jim from Jeju Olle Trail up here on Jeju Island. I got an alert about your question.
Yes, it is possible to walk, stay, walk, stay on the trail. These days almost all routes have accommodation near to the start/end point of a route. However, the signs on buildings indicating that it is indeed accommodation is not always apparent to the foreign walker. Especially due to the language barrier.
What routes are you thinking about doing while here?
And finally I'm going to push you towards jejuolletrailguide-net. This our official English language site that includes a free guidebook to download in English (newly updated).
You can also find our office contact information on the site. You can find my contact information too.
So I'll leave you with that and if you need more help I'm only a message away.
Regards,
Jim Saunders
