“Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?” Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

To get to see the gannets, you ride on a open trailer pulled by a tractor over the beach. It's a bumpy ride over the rocky areas and your feet are likely to get wet. The geology is fascinating and the gannets are fun to watch. You have to hike a little over a kilometer, mostly uphill, to see them.... More

A fabulous way to reach the gannet colonies at Black Reef & the Plateau. My driver provided excellent commentary on the geological features of the Cape as well as information about the birds.

Why have we waited for so long to do this! It was fantastic! The guys were safety conscious, but also enough risk involved that kept you holding on to the tractor. The scenery was stunning and the gannets beautiful. The whole family went, adult children and partners, and we all loved it. Our guide was very entertaining as well. An... More

We did the Gannet Beach Adventure with a friend today as a birthday present for him and were not disappointed. Awesome views, super fun tractor ride with very informative and entertaining guide and of course the amazing gannets! There is an optional hike up to the cliffs to see the gannet colony at the picnic stop/Cape Kidnappers. I wanted to... More

We are locals but finally decided to do this after years of sending visitors out based on word of mouth alone. It was even better than I expected! We had a particularly rocky beach day and had to get on and off the trailer quite a few times, but this just added to the fun. The driver was able to... More

An exhilarating trip in a tractor trailer along rocky beaches ending in close up views of the gannets.

We saw this on Trip Advisor and thought we would try it today. We didn't really know the extent of the "adventure" aspect of it. They have 3 old tractors pulling two wagons each. The wagons have a little padding for the seating all around, foot rails and "hold on tight" rails behind you. You need all rails you can... More

Had a good morning out with the group on a trailer towed by an old tractor. Our driver had a great sense of humour and was full of facts about the cliffs, the local geology and the birds. We enjoyed it.

Awesome tractor ride along the rock strewn beach. For the majority of us, this ride is the only way to traverse the entire stretch of beach from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. Loved the changing landscape, the gorgeous cliffs, beautiful ocean and colony of Gannets. The drivers were very helpful, knowledgeable and cautious. The terrain could be very rocky at times,... Excellent trip. Fun tractor and trailer ride along the beach at the base of the cliffs. Explanations of the formation of the cliffs delivered with style. The two colonies of gannets were amazing especially as you could get up really close.Colin and his team were great and made the experience really special.
