The Kulekhani dam is about 47km away from Kathmandu, a two hour drive. Located not far away from the city, it is amazing to be around in such a panoramic landscape. Visiting the powerhouse and learning about its workings can be a different yet interesting day out. Even if it didn’t interest us in visiting the inner parts of the powerhouse, the view itself from the dam and the powerhouse is more than satisfying.
Besides the dam and the powerhouse, you can visit the nearby village and interact with villagers about their culture. Fish is a specialty of the place; absolutely delicious, it is available in the local eateries in the village. We had tried both fried fish & fish curry which was worth to price. Boating is also another attraction of the place however there is quite a lot restriction area in Kulekhani.
Highly recommended this place - You can go boating with your family, enjoy the day paddling in the lake, and have moments to cherish. Have a perfect getaway for a day, enjoying the spectacular view, the boating experience and the fish in Kulekhani.

This is a rock-fill dam which was made with the purpose for generating hydroelectricity - also popularly know as Indra Sarovar. While visiting Chitlang, on the way back we decided to stop there and enjoy the beautiful scene around. Many of us went for boating which available by paying about NPR 200/person. The lake water is very clean and the scene around is truly mesmerizing. These facilities have been added in recent years and it is attracting more and more tourist. There is also a small restaurants which is good enough to find common food and drinks. However knowing the increasing popularity, there is enough potentiality to develop is further - at least building some temp huts on the bend of lake for tourist to take rest and protect them from sun....can add beach chair and have some small drinks and nibbles shops around.

Beautiful place to hang out with your dear ones. You can have the great view of Kulekhani River and Kulekhani Dam as well. You can also visit Kulekhani picnic spot and Markhu which is some minutes after Kulekhani Dam where you can enjoy boating.

We were group of friend visiting this place and found it really beautiful. It took around 3 hours to reach there from Kathmandu via Pharping. The nice pond and green lust of forest were amazing. We loved and will come again whenever we feel bored in Kathmandu. Worth a visit.

he Kulekhani Dam is a rock-fill dam on the Kulekhani River near Kulekhani in Makwanpur District of Narayani Zone, Nepal.

The 114 m (374 ft) tall dam creates a reservoir called Indra Sarobar which stores 85,300,000 m3 (69,200 acre·ft) of water. From the reservoir, water is sent to the Kulekhani I Hydropower Station.

Tasting the fish is awesome here..

The road that leads to Khulekhani from balkhu to pharing to Khulekhani is very dusty. When we reached Shesnarayan Temple, we were already coverd in dust. The remaining road also offered more dust and some dirt with the view of nature. If you are thinking of going there on two wheeler, take the off road bike. It will be much more easier. And don't wear your favourite clothes. 😉
