A trip up the west coast is not complete until a tasting at Groote Post has been achieved. Their sauvignon blancs are perfect. They too have the extinct Qagga in captivity.

Most of all, we enjoyed Luzerne! She coudl sell ice to eskimos! We also enjoued the platter lunch (not Hilda's Kitchen which is a proper sit-down restaurant) while wine-tasting and, inevitably, buying lots of wine.

Getting to Groote Post is an experience however - 10.5 kms along a deeply rutted track from the R27 one way, or 7.5kms along a deeply rutted track off the road to Darling. More signposts toassure visitors they are, literally, on the right track would be sensible.

We enjoyed the wine-tasting and thoroughly recommend Groote Post's bubbly and wooded chardonary.

A fabulous meal at Hilda’s restaurant was amazing for three of us. We all had menu envy as we would have loved to eat each other’s meal. Merlot was superb. Went to winery to buy some merlot and met the gorgeous and fascinating Lizanne. Sure she could sell coals to Newcastle or wine to a teetotaller😄

Groote Post located on-top of a granite kop in the Darling Hills is a veritable oasis amongst the fynbos flora of the dry West Coast microclimate. Vines are grown on decomposed acidic granite soils on south facing slopes that help shade the grapes from the intense summer heat. The result of all this physical and chemical weathering is the desirable soil characteristics that vintners love.

Groote Post was a wonderful day out and a visit is highly recommended as it is a nostalgic experience taking you back to those Victorian Colonialist days where the Earth and the Cape Climate combined to produce outstanding wines for the Empire

Nick and his son Peter Pentz, the current owners of Groote Post Estate, are delightfully welcoming and charming characters who were attentive hosts.

The Georgian, colonial Cape Dutch designed homestead has yellow-wood floors and ceilings that are in superb condition and there are many fireplaces – relatively rare in Cape Dutch homesteads. Antique maps of the Cape’s history adorn the walls and with historic farming and kitchen items on display it is like having lunch in a living museum. Lunch in the delightful Cape Dutch farmstead was excellent and the rustic food on the first class menu was eminently affordable!

At the wine tasting our favourite wine produced at Groote Post was the Estate Riesling, which has a juicy acidity with a light and subtle mineral taste on the palate. It’s remarkably inexpensive price tag (R120/£6) per bottle makes it exceptional value for money.

If you have the time enjoy the areas back roads (mostly good gravel) and make time for both a wine tasting and something to eat. Wines are fairly well known and rated.. the old house and restaurant is also worth the visit and walk through

The tasting room is inside this gorgeous, historic Cape Colony building where you have to walk through the shining wine tanks to arrive at a smiling young woman who will guide you through the range... the whole range if you dare.

I absolutely loved standing and chatting to our wine hostess. It was a wonderful experience for my Italian family member to enjoy and taste the beautiful wines Groote Post is producing.

I will definitely be returning! but next time I'll bring the 4x4 rather than my run-around.

What a hidden gem in Darling.
We were at the beer house and moved onto the wine

The tasting was wonderful and the waiters serving us was great and knew all about the wine.

Groote Post restaurant and winery are situated off the beaten track outside Darling, western cape. A perfect spot for wine tasting outdoors, fantastic food, either indoors or outdoors or a picnic - children’s play area which can be seen from tables and shaded outdoor eating. Food was fantastic. Unusual small menu but each dish was unique and tasted superb.

We had a great tasting presented by relaxed and friendly people. Loved the MCC and Chardonnay, and couldn’t leave without having some boxes sent home. We were fortunate enough to see the resident baby owls. Made our day!
