This place is amazing and unique - the underground houses with incredibly well preserved mosaics are amazing and very particular to the region. Definitely worth a visit, and a guided tour. Why isn't this place a UNESCO world heritage site??

We went here on the same day after visiting Dougga (made for a long day but it’s possible!) and it was a different but still great experience. There are some wonderfully preserved Roman houses and mosaics as well as bigger buildings like the baths and theatre, with some Byzantine additions (clumsy in comparison to the Roman) thrown in for good measure. Very much worth a trip.
We were there off season in January and were the only tourists we saw at the site which was pretty special.
We are at the restaurant in the tourist centre and it was very tasty and seemed hygienic.

I was impressed with the type of underground Houses which are still intact, a site with still work to do to discover more houses. Location direction Beni Bechir.

Amazing old roman town in a baking plateau. Incredibly hot place made the romans build their villas as the normally did and you see, as everywhere, hip height walls that you have to imagine the rest. But wait, since it is so hot, the decided to replicate their villas UNDERGROUD. So take the stairs and you are in a perfectly preserved roman villa with air conditioning. Unique in the world and you get the real sense of roman life.

I cannot recommend this enough! Took my breath away. Apparently this is only a third of it. I enjoyed this more than Carthage. Better preserved. The setting is stunning too. Having a guide is a must as they will take you to the highlights and you learn more. I would have missed a lot of the detail, had I not had a guide with me. She was very good. The area is very hot. You can combine your visit with Dougga which is an hour away. If you are doing both, go to Dougga first as it is hotter there. Start early.

Bulla Regia is a little known jewel in the North -west of Tunisia. One takes a short taxi ride from the city of Jendouba to get there. Tickets are between 3-6 dinar per person and totally worth it. This is apparently the only site of Roman ruins in Tunisia where the houses were built underground. So many are still in tact and many of the original mosaics are still there. Start at the public bath work your way around to the house of treasure, the house of the fish, and the Christian church (baptisimal tank still in tact). End with a walk though the forum and on to the theatre. You walk on a road that streched from Carthage through into Algeria. It feels as though you have passed through time. If you speak French or Arabic, usually a local shepherd is willing to give you a tour. Alternately, tours can be arranged at the ticket office across the road.
On your way back into the city, be sure to stop off at Montazeh. This is a lovely, classy cafe / restaurant where it is perfectly fine for women to visit (unlike many coffee shops in town). It is set in the hills, with surrounding trees. This is one place where your feet can soak down into lush grass (nearly year round) and where kids can play at the playground.

This is a site that is not frequently visited. If you have a car or are travelling by public transport this is a must. This ancient city from the Roman era is unique for its in situ mosaics. The villas were built with basements to provide cool in the summer. The mosaics are better than any you will see in the Barda Museum. Our highlight!

Bulla Regia is a little more than 2 hours from Tunis. I hired a driver and combined a tour here in March 2016 with a visit to Dougga, which is possible but makes for a very long day. Bulla Regia is known for its Roman villas. Like other Roman sites, the portion of the villas that were above ground are largely gone other than the base of walls and columns and several nice mosaic floors. What makes Bulla Regia unique is that the underground level of the villas (built so the owners could escape the summer heat) are remarkably intact with complete courtyards and rooms. Several of them have quite wonderful mosaic floors. The sight has no useful explanatory signs and I hired one of the local guides at the entrance (a very knowledgeable woman with excellent language skills). Although I rarely hire guides on site, I highly recommend this at Bulla Regia because it would be very easy to miss some of the most interesting sights.

These are fantastic ruins in an amazing part of and amazing country. The ruins are in remarkably good conditions, the theatre is beautiful and the underground ("troglodyte-esque") house is stunning. Many mosaics are still in situ, and a bit of water to brush the dust off makes for an amazing photo. strongly suggest you take a guidebook as there is little info at the site itself, the museum across the road (doubles as to key office) can arrange a guide, but for those with more than a passing interest and a bit of pre-reading completed, this will be not be needed. Take lunch with you, but the museum/ticket office is also a cafe and does great cay. Allow at least 4 hrs to explore if you like Roman stuff, the site is enormous! If you have a car, it is an easy day trip from Tabarka. To my mind, Bulla Regia is second only to Dougga, but has the advantage of not seeing that many tour groups on day trips from Tunis.

We went here just after Easter 2015. There had been heavy rain so some rooms were closed, but it did not matter. The site is huge, takes 2 - 3 hours to tour, and a guide is essential. With a good guide, the place comes to life, you can imagine the roman men relaxing & feasting, the wealthy women platting their hair or arranging flowers, the slaves brushing the floors or preparing the food, the whole town turning out for the latest theatre performance, and the simple joy of everyday life in this intact Roman city.
It cost 15 Dinar for 2 to enter, and 25 for our guide. She was wonderful, really added colour to the stones, and pointed out the essential details. The mosaics look good on the floor, but when wetted and photographed they appear so much better. (use google images: bulla regia mosaics)

I want to visit Dougga & bulla Regia with a guided tour. As I see the cheapest online tour (including lunch) is 107 $. I want to know what is the price of this tour in local agencies in Tunis? It is better to buy online or in person?
