This place is worth two hours of your time. You can see some very old buildings. The bell that rang at the time of the murder of Tsarevich Dmitry. You can also climb the clock tower and see the bells ringing.

We came for a walk in Uglich and of course visited the Kremlin. Took a tour and didn't regret it, learned a lot of interesting things. And then we took a walk around the grounds. Although it is the main attraction of the city, it is quite secluded.

Russia is filled with beautiful churches and cathedrals ... I found this one particularly interesting because of its history. Church of Prince Dimitry on Blood was built as a memorial to 8 year old Dimitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, who was found dead with a knife in his throat in 1591. There are 2 main theories: that he was murdered under the orders of regent Boris Godunov, or that Dimitri had an epileptic seizure while playing and fell on his own knife (noone quite bought that last theory). By the early 17th century Uglich had become a pilgrimage site and Dimitry had become a saint, with a small wooden church built where he died. The persent memorial church was built in 1692. The domes are blue and the church is red, making it hard to miss when approaching by river. The bell that announced Dimitry's death is also there (it was sent to Siberia after his death and later returned).

Uglich, on the banks of the Volga, is another tourist stop on the St Petersburg to Moscow river cruise route. Located strategically on a sharp bend in the river, the town was a fortress for the ancient Moscovy Kingdom. The main attraction is the Church of St Dmitry on Spilled Blood. We were informed that local legend recalls how in 1591, the 10-year-old Prince Dmitry of the Ruyvik Dynasty was murdered by Boris Godunov who then claimed the throne of Russia and was later murdered himself. These events plunged Russia into three decades of turmoil known as the ‘Time of Trouble’. The Church, now a museum, is on the exact spot where the young prince was murdered. The murals inside the building depict these events. The other attraction at Uglich Kremlin (kremlin means fortress) is an odd exhibit, it is a 1930s tractor which was owned by a woman back in the Soviet days. Then the town was very proud of its tractor.

On May 14, 2016, my Viking River Cruise stopped at Uglich, Russia which has a population of about 34,000. As we exited the place where the ship docked, there was a huge souvenir market that had about every kind of Russian souvenir you could imagine, but not the high end souvenirs you might really want like real fox fur hats or mink hats. I did buy a small carved chess set for my grandson. It had one side with USA and the other with the Russian Red stars on each of the pieces. I was able to negotiate with the seller and got a great price.
We then walked into the main town square and, apparently since it was a Saturday, they were having some running races by the younger set of the town.
Uglich was founded in 1148 and has several parks, churches and neoclassical buildings. The term Kremlin refers to a section of the city or town where the fort was or is located and is usually walled with old churches inside the Kremlin. The Uglich Kremlin was smaller than the Moscow Kremlin. The church inside the Uglich Kremlin is the church of St. Dmitry on the Blood. It was built in the 1690s on the spot where the body of the young 8 year old boy, Tsarevich Dmitry, was found. The boy was stabbed and died in 1591 on the spot and his assassination was immediately discovered and the person discovering the body rang the church bell as a call to arms after the murder. They claimed that the boy had thrown himself on a sword during an epileptic fit. However, it is widely believed that he was murdered on the orders of the acting ruler, Boris Godunov.
Uglich is also know for it excellent watch making and there is a watch store in the main square next to the Kremlin.
It was interesting to walk around Uglich and see how a small town functioned. The souvenir shops and stalls were getting a bit old by this point.

If you take a riverboat trip through Russia, as we did, you will stop here in Uglich. I highly recommend the visit. The Cathedral of St. Dmitri on the Blood commemorates the murder of Ivan the Terrible's 9 year old son in 1591 with amazing frescoes. The official version was that Prince Dmitry was staying at the log house just next door to the church ( which, of course, wasn't there at the time) when he "accidentally stabbed himself while having an epileptic seizure" outdoors, a few steps from his house. Riiiiight! Conveniently, Dmitiry's death cleared the way for Boris Godunov to usurp the throne. The church was built on the spot where Dmitry died.
In addition to the Cathedral are several other interesting old buildings in what was the original Kremlin ( or fortress) of Uglich.
As you walk back down toward the boat landing, you will go through an excellent market with all kinds of really nice things to buy - fur hats and scarves, linens, sweaters, t-shirts and all kinds of stuff. Since I like to do my Christmas shopping while traveling, I was able to find wonderful things at the Uglich market.

The old town of Uglich, now walless, consists of 1 active church, 1 museum church, one church turned community hall, a Prince's home, and a building once used as a city hall. These buildings are located now in a park like setting with tall birches lining the entry walkway and a river at its backside. It didn't look like a Kremlin without its walls, but there still was evidence of perhaps a moat that had once surrounded the area and a bridge to cross it. On it, to greet our arrival, the town's songstress sung snatches of songs hoping to get a donation for her efforts.

Once in the park, the buildings are the focus of a visit, but there was an old 1930's John Deer tractor on display in a fenced off area that also caught our attention. The churches with their colorful exteriors certainly are not hidden in the park's foliage. Each is different in appearance. Our tour guide from the river cruise ship docked 10 minutes away explained the purpose of each church.

The Transfiguration church - pale yellow exterior and 5 green domes - is an active church with a breathtaking 6 tiered iconostasis at the front of the church from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. Many of the icons in it were from the 17th and 18th century. The locals are very proud that the vaulted ceiling is covered with a copy of Raphael's "Transfiguration" painting. The other frescoes inside were also attractively done, each in its own frame illustrated stories from the Gospels.

The Church of St. Dmitri of the Blood is a memorial church so there is an admission charge and camera fee (around 100 rubles). The reason to see inside this church are the frescoes depicting an historical incident that occurred on the spot of the church's altar - the murder of a child prince by his usurper. These frescoes used a mural style so the images seemed to merge together. This church is easily recognizable with its bright red brick walls and thick white trim, but most noticeable are the 5 blue domes sprinkled with gold trim.

The church turned community hall had no domes and was a 1 level building. Portraits of leading Uglich citizens from past years graced its walls. We heard a short recital of a capella singing by young men in this hall.

The brownish red brick 2 level Princely Chamber was a photo stop of its exteriors and the bronze sculpture of the child prince killed nearby. It is this pose that appears on the Uglich's coat of arms.

The existing stone buildings of Uglich's Kremlin were contained along the riverside. Once we got to the buildings we had come to visit, little time was wasted walking to them as they were grouped together. We walked along narrow paved treed pathways, some lined with colorful seasonal annuals.Perhaps the large grassy area all around. had once been were peasants had lived in wood huts which didn't survive town fires, wars, and the test of time. Uglich is a city in the Golden Ring and its offers quite a few tourist attractions besides the Uglich Kremlin.

We had some free time after our 1 1/4 hour tour to explore the adjacent public park with a war memorial for "Defenders of the Fatherland" and a children's playground with playhouses built on Baba Yaga feet. We also stopped in at the shops across the street where the jeweler sold Omega watches from the town watch factory, lacquer ware, and nesting dolls.

If you are on a river cruise, you'll probably call here. The Kremlin, like the one in Moscow, is simply the old fortified area of the town. Today it's where the main churches are, shops, markets etc. The ships dock very near by - about a 10 minute stroll - so you can't miss it & will be directed towards it.

We visited the Uglich Kremlin as a stop on a river cruise. It is only a 10 minute walk from where the ships dock, which passes local stalls which offered a good range of Russian souvenirs at reasonable prices. According to the cruise guides the best place to buy. Uglich is a very small town, and the central attraction is the very ancient and historical Kremlin. It was here that the young Dmitri, Tsar Ivan the Terrible's heir, was murdered. The Church of Spilled Blood, erected on the site where young Dmitri was murdered, is beautiful and very interesting enough, but the entire Kremlin is pretty amazing. Uglich has a long history and well worth a visit. Beyond the usual important icons, there was a bell with an amusing history and a local musical group which impressed us.
