About
The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

When you visit this region and want to see butterflies, you have a choice between this place and Selvatura's butterfly garden. Hands down, you choose the Monteverde Butterfly Garden. Because they have amazing tour guides who are passionate about their work, they have 4 gardens, 3 of which are climate controlled so that butterflies are active way more often and dependably observable. By contrast, if it's a chilly cloudy day, you will see very little at Selvatura which feels more like a factory, commercialized experience. I don't understand those who are complaining about the price of admission. It was a magical, delightful experience and they let you return as many times as you like on your trip. It was the highlight of my trip to Monteverde. Thank you to all of the dedicated staff here.

Our visit started out with a lecture by The Bug Lady. She was very entertaining, hilarious and full of interesting facts about insects. We then went on a tour of the various butterfly rooms which were interesting. Time well spent.

Since we stayed close to the garden en there was a geocache near the entrance we wanted to check it out. At first we thought 20$ a lot of money just to see some butterflies, but we were curious. And what a delight it was. Of course seeing the beautiful butterflies up close is great, but the explanation from the enthousiastic Spanish guide was awesome! He was so cheerfully talking about cockroaches, spiders, scorpions and beetles, it was really inspiring. When we crossed paths with cockroaches later on on our trip we thought: hey! Little brown friends! Instead of our former yikes! Kill it attitude. That is what coming to CR was all about for me: learn about the nature and respect it, admire it, but not fear it. Not only the colorfull birds or special mammals, but also little critters.

Informative tour which is really useful before you go to the cloud forest so you can spot the butterflies.Went back a few times as you pay for the tour and you can re-enter several times. The gift shop is lovely and they donate profits to the local library.

Our guide Veronica was absolutely delightful, had a wonderful way of storytelling all of the science while helping us enjoy the sheer beauty of each of the creatures and butterflies she showed us.
The staff in general were extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

While any trip to Monteverde is full of amazing experiences, this one stands out as one of true learning and understanding!
Thank you to Veronica and the whole team for a great morning

We walked to the Jardin so we got there just in time for the start of the tour. This tour goes beyond your friendly butterfly, touching (in some cases literally) a lot of the insect world of Costa Rica. If you are super squeamish about insects you can stay in the background, say no thank you to the offers to hold them and wait for the butterflies.

Which there are 4 butterfly houses to tour through. As typical butterflies have magnificent colors ( and they will tell you why) but do not make for the best subjects for photos, being so flighty and all. If you want to spend more time in a house you can go back through after the tour is finished.

Good place if you have young kids, like most things in MonteVerde there are some up and down hills between each butterfly house. We learned some things and had a little fun with our guide.

It was a little pricey though at $65 for 4 adults.

The Monteverde Butterfly gardens are worth a visit in Monteverde! Entry price is fair and they have 4 gardens to walk through with an array of butterfly species in each. There is also bugs to look at! What I like about this facility is that you can also see an abundance of wildlife. You may run into a Coati, an Agouti, or see Capuchin and Howler monkeys overhead- right there on the property! The reception are helpful and friendly and if they spot a cool bird or toucan they are quick with their binoculars to help you spot them all.

We don't really understand the purpose of this place: is it a museum/zoo, a place to preserve butterflies? It's quite dilapidated as said in previous reviews. Visit made by interns/volunteers (not very clear either) The walk in the greenhouses and the garden is pleasant but it's clearly not worth $20 per person!

Well worth a visit. The gardens overlook a lovely panorama of cloud forest, and the tours are entertaining and educational. The bug bit at the beginning will particularly enthrall children as will the leaf cutter ants. The butterflies of course are beautiful.

Close to Santa Elena town. On the right out of town if heading toward the Monteverde cloud forest. Down a road with several restaurants and then a steeper section to the entrance. It was signposted. There was a small parking lot. We went through four separate zones with a knowledgeable guide. There's also a bug room with spiders. Whilst I hate them, they were fascinating and interesting to see. You go round with a guide first and can then go round again on your own at leisure which was nice to hang around and see them for longer. Saw many birds on the walk round. They list the birds seen on the chalk board near reception. An impressive list. Think we spent about 2 hours here. I think I cost $20 each and closes around 3pm. Kids would like this place.
