This place appears to be permanently closed, abandoned and looks like it's being taken apart. I heard from a local that the animals were given to another facility.

Learned so much
Feb 2020
This was not on my to do list. So glad we decided to go in just when tour was starting. Guide spoke and showed pictures of many kinds of snakes and shared so many facts. We then looked in the cases to find the many snakes. It was fascinating.Saw a large snake shedding his/her skin. Guide helped us locate the ones that were hidden. We went back next day to see snakes more active. Definitely recommend spending time here. Guide and young woman at front desk were delightful.
Was a family visit (2 moms and our married son and daughter)

Excellent!
Sep 2019 • Family
We visited today with our daughters and they really enjoyed. Was expensive with around 50€ for the family but considering that we had a guide with us for nearly 2h I think is a fare price. I do not like to see animals in captivity but when it comes to the dangereous Terciopelo viper I prefer to see it across glass than in the wild. Highly recommended to visit at night, children enjoyed a lot searching for the animals with thr light torches.

Best thing in Monte Verde
May 2019
Wow!!!! Amazing experience must get a guide truly incredible and thoughtful and well spoken. Had an answer to every question worth every penny I saw so many species and I love all of them equally. I don’t even like snakes I think theyre for nerds and now I am a nerd.

The guide was truly the best part of the serpentario this is a must see. We spent a couple hours here. The snakes were quite active during the day and I got amazing videos.

Must inquire about the guide otherwise I can see why people are not as happy with the price

Best snake selection you'll see, but be prepared to pay
Apr 2019 • Couples
We visited the Herpetarium on a whim. We were a bit surprised a hefty price tag for entry, but the ticket price does include a day visit and return for a night visit (most of the snakes are nocturnal) if you want. Their collection includes just about every Costa Rican snake you would want (or not want) to see. For our visit, the place was empty which was nice, but the staff made no offer to give any additional information, and the animal description cards are very basic. So, if you want to know more about what you are looking at, I suggest a guidebook or Google. Overall, if you want to spend an hour or so for one-stop Costa Rican snake shopping and don't mind paying, this is the place for you.

Can see lots of reclusive creatures
Jan 2019 • Couples
Super staff and great presentation of all sorts of snakes, plus some other creatures. We went at night when they were all moving around. Recommend going after sunset. Great, educational experience.

Not really worth the entry fee .
Jan 2019 • Couples
It costs $14 per person to get in, although this gives you two entries do you can go during the evening when, apparently more is happening.

There are about 60 creatures, mostly snakes, a few frogs ( just about impossible to see) and some turtles.

Quite well laid out, you are given a flash light so you can light up the darker areas in the enclosures.
The snakes are quite impressive.
An hour is more than long enough.

Pricey and small
Jan 2019 • Family
We’ve been to a lot of zoos and reptile places in the US, so seeing them in small terrariums here really wasn’t worth it. Ask for a small discount if you did any Sky Adventures on your visit, or better yet skip it!

Awesome little snake house!
Oct 2018 • Family
I was skeptical at first, but my daughter really loves snakes and wanted to go... We ended up spending most of hte afternoon here. Yes, it is small, but they have a great collection of most of the snakes from around Costa Rica, and for a kid that really loves snakes and frogs, it was paradise. After we went through the exhibits together, I handed over my camera and let her revisit all her favorites, checking to see if they moved our if she could get a better picture. We were there when they had guide tour students interning there from a school on the coast - one in particular was super helpful, staying nearby and answering questions and offering more information. We came back again in the evening and really enjoyed seeing how active some of the nocturnal snakes were. Probably not the most amazing place for people only vaguely interested in snakes, but if you or your kids are really interested in herps, it's a great way to spend some time. My daughter absolutely love it!

A small Herpetarium in Santa Elena
Nov 2018 • Friends
The Santa Elena Herpetarium is quiet small, not impressive at all and may seem costly (US $15 p/p) specially if you visit during day time, not much activity because most of the species seems to be resting or on their nap time, probably most of them are night creatures and you maybe disappointed not able to see much.

But if you haven’t been to a herpetarium before, this could be an interesting activity to experience and have a close look to these specimens, at this place they gather about 30 species of reptile, which belongs to some of most popular species of snakes, frogs and non-sea turtles of Costa Rica!

In Costa Rica could be common to see these animals in wildlife adventure tours but still depends on the nature for the animals to appear and show up, so if you haven’t had luck to see any of these animals in the nature, this could be an option at least you can meet them here for real.
