About
From the beautiful new Reception building, descend a sometimes steep trail mostly through primary wet mountain forest to the bottom of a forested canyon hosting a beautiful spring-fed stream. The trail continues upstream following the rushing water, crossing three bridges, until finally the canyon narrows to reveal the beautiful waterfall.

A nice activity if you're looking for something quite leisurely with not as many tourists as the popular hotspots. There was about 10 people there at the busiest point, and just the 2 of us when we first got down there.

It costs a few dollars entrance fee. It is then roughly a 20 minute walk down a trail with a good few stairs to the waterfall. The trail is well maintained so there is no tricky or treacherous paths. The waterfall itself is in a really secluded spot with high banks on each side so it is a very relaxing place. You can stay for as long as you want and take a dip in the water if you want. Fair warning, it's cold. It's not really big enough to 'swim' in but you can definitely get in and float around and get underwater.

The walk is very scenic and there is also wildlife to see if you're lucky. We had an agouti run across our path and saw some Capuchin's very close, a much better view than on any of the guided tours we went on. The waterfall, and the small bridges over the stream are a great spot for photos.

Got 2 or 3 hours you want to spend in a peaceful nature spot near Santa Elena? Here you go. A short, yet steep hike takes you to this lovely little waterfall. The morning light shown brightly on it as we had the place to ourselves.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We enjoy learning how our visitors enjoyed their visit. Our waterfall is in the Monteverde community, some 3 kilometers from the Santa Elena community. We are next to the Cerro Plano community. Best wishes from the La Val family. Sincerely yours,

We did a four waterfall tour and this was the first off the four. It is a beautiful falls and worth seeing however you should know is is a short but strenuous hike and there is no swimming at the falls as it's too shallow.

Hello Gary. I am afraid you wrote a review on the wrong location. Our waterfall is famous because people come to swim. The distance from the entrance to the fall is short if you want, and it is not difficult unless you have some physical issues. We are glad you took the time to write a review. By the way, there are only TWO waterfalls in the Monteverde community. This is the largest and the only one where you are allowed to swim. I hope you can come and visit. Sincerely yours,

We went on a whim and found it off of AirBnB... We initially thought it was a tour when in all reality, it is a self-guided walk but well worth the $12 we spent :-)

They open at nine, and when I say 9 am, I mean 😆 nice walk down if you have back or knee problems; this might not be for you.

A little gem! We were actually just looking for a short late afternoon hike. And how well were those $6 spent. A nice „adventurous“ (that‘s what our kids say when there are steps, roots, little bridges and rocks in a trail) trail to a beautiful waterfall. We were lucky enough to have an aguti crossing our way and a capuchin monkey sitting on a tree about 2 meters from us. Not to mention all the beautiful birds. We would absolutely recommend visiting this place. You will enjoy it, even if it’s just for an hour as in our case. However, if you have the time, you will certainly want to savor this place a little longer.

Was looking for a quick waterfall hike to do before leaving Monte verde and this was perfect. Only about a 20 minute hike down to the waterfall and only cost $6 to enter. Richard the office host is super friendly and informative. Really enjoyed the waterfall.

We stumbled across the sign for this as we walked from our hotel to Stella’s. Its a few dollars to get in and theres quite a few stairs - but the waterfall is beautiful. The pool at the bottom is good for swimming. Wish we’d had swimmers with us as had to stick to paddling. Really lovely find!

Entrance 6$. More than worth it !
Very friendly miss at the entrance who explaines the trail & opens up the gate for you.
What you find behind that gate is a very suprising trail with a paradise ending at the waterfall. Good pathway & stairs. You don’t have to be a real hiking expert to walk this through. Way to beautiful to miss this when you’re visiting Monteverde.

My family enjoyed our 90 mins or so here. The hike down was fine. The path is well kept and it was easy enough.

We were the only ones there. My kids (7,9&11) enjoyed the nature en route.

There was quite a lot of debris from fallen trees which was fine - no issues with that. I think they could make a bit of effort to clear up some of the rubbish (clothes/ plastics etc) though

That aside. It was a nice place for a swim. It is cold. Luckily my family all love cold water!

The place closes at 5 and while it’s an expensive swim - I’d pay less at home... we did all enjoy it.

Dear HantsJonny: Thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to write such a nice review. It is always nice for us to read a bit about our visitors' experience. Perhaps we failed to let you know that the last hurricane we had made a large mess. We had no communication with the world for nearly 8 days thanks to the river. The road and some homes were gone and every time we get a heavy rain part of those homes is visible. Not only the belongings of our neighbors but the actual structures of their homes are all over the river. We clean the river often enough and the rain and water keep bringing more and more rubbish as you mentioned. There are very large and heavy parts of some houses we can't remove without special machinery. But you are right about it and we are aware of it. We are trying to keep it clean but it will take a long while for the river and the rain to stop bringing down all that was taken away from our friends by the heavy storm. We are glad you and the kids enjoyed the swim. Not everyone comes to swim but it is one of the options open to all visitors. Our small team of experts is thankful. We wish you the best and hope you will visit again. Gratefully yours, The Monteverde Waterfall Team

what a lovely place for a swim on a hot day! Super close to town and a nice hike down into the ravine. We had the place to ourselves most of the afternoon and had a great time swimming here. The water is cold but super nice and we saw lots of animals (including a capybara and a kinkajou!) and really pretty birds. Would certainly come back here any time!
