We arrived about 10ish and where the only people their. You pay entry 250r each and then you give money to the guide at the end. Take your loose change for the lucky cotton rest band you will get from a monks. Amazing paintings and sculptures telling the Buddha history.

Our Tuk Tuk driver offered to then take us to see the light house.

This temple is the largest temple in the Matara district &The world's first tunnel temple. It is a major tourist spot for both local and foreign nationals as well as a sacred place. This temple is about 100 years old. There is a separate entrance for foreigners and a separate parking lot and necessary facilities for them can be obtained by entering from that entrance. It's not the first entry you'll come across. It is for locals. After passing the first entrance, the second entrance, which is met with ben, left, is for foreigners only. By entering through that entrance, foreigners can safely visit

We can highly recommend to visit this temple. It is not only the home for the highest Buddha in Sri Lanka, it is also about the history of Buddhism that is presented like comics on the walls.

It only costs 250 rupees to get in and is worth a brief visit. There are hundreds of paintings depicting the lives of Buddha. A guide will show you through the underground temple and then onto the Buddha which is impressive. There are reasonable views from the top one you climb a few flights of stairs beside the Buddha.

We paid entrance and guide who really was only more district us than explain something as his English is very limited and we had to walk around in his tempo as well he mentioned donations more than 5 times. If you go there its better to go alone around temple.

We visited the temple without expecting much and we were very surprised with what we saw. More than 7000 paintings with the history of Buddha and Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Beautiful landscape, and a beautiful big Buddha on the front. It's worth seeing, specially if you can have a Buddhist student to show you around.

Weherahena Temple is not a new place to visit to me. This is situated in my born city Matara.5km away from my home. The reason I'm writing this I'm so sad to say that they are asking money from Foreigners illegally. Please don't pay any money to temple entrance. IF YOU IKE ONLY,you can donate some money to boxes inside there. That is for development of the temple.

As you walk across the suspension bridge you enter a peaceful haven. The views along the coast from here are wonderful. It'swell worth the effort to take a stroll around here.
