The main source of revenue is parking tickets. They love to give parking tickets that can cost more than $100. They will give you a parking ticket in Castlemola within minutes. Park in the parking lot and make sure you leave someone in the car while you pay your $2 to get your parking receipt. The elevator does not work. Rubble castle at the top. View is good. Can see Mt Etna.

Stunning views. This is a little castle ruin (medieval) on top of a mountain. It’s free to visit and was so peaceful. If you’re doing a bus tour then do stop here and spend an hour. Z

Worthy of the title ”italy’s best castle”, which we learned that castelmola has apparently won.

Visited several times as we were staying in a hotel within walking distance. Castelmola is a super cute and half sleepy castle village that wakes up in the evening as people come up and out for dinner. Definitely worth a visit also if you are staying in taormina. Excellent views over a large part of the coast as castelmola is perched atop a small mountaintop.

Extremely easy (and cheap!) to come up via local bus direct from Taormina. Don’t forget to check return timetables, as taxis can occationally be hard to lock down (we found this out the hard way)!

Lovely view but not sure it was worth the painful, car sick inducing drive. Depends on what you're looking for but I didn't think it was worth the awful cab ride up.

Caltelmola is a small village about 5kms above Taormina. We travelled by local bus from the centre, near Porta Messina. It’s worth, because it’s a very steep rocky road to climb up. In Castelmola we walked in the narrow streets and climbed up 78 stairs to the castle. All that is left on the medieval castle are the ruins of the massive Norman walls. It was built in 9th century under ConstatinoCaramalo, last Tauromenion’s strategist. It’s worth a visit. We walked back in the past. The view was the most fantastic: Etna, Taormina and the sea.

The climb to the castle serves but one purpose - to see the views. And at that it does not disappoint. Not much else to see here and it's a long climb but it's worth it.

The castle is derelict, it’s the view you really come for.
A steep climb up of around 40 mins to the village but easy walking back down 30 mins to our hotel, Villa Ducale. Worth every bit for the views from the top of the village and the almond wine!

The taxi wasn’t cheap - €20- and the walk down very hard on our poor thighs! But the time at Castelmola was worth the trip, to get stunning views made all the better for the further climb up to the ruined castle.
The walk down starts via stairs to the side of the road near the café, passing a house called Casa Sara across a car park.

There is not much left of the castle, but its views are outstanding, specially on a clear day! Nice place for a picnic :)
