Crunch... crunch...crunch... You are standing in the dark forest, wearing your mosquito hat, listening to a variety of strange noises and are waiting for those unmistakable footsteps Ian (your expert guide) was talking about. You know you have to be patient, as Ian was very clear about this in his briefing. You are holding your breath, trying to be an... More

We enjoyed the Okarito Kiwi Tours experience during our trip trough the South island of New Zealand, and it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I was very excited about this activity because I have always wanted to see a real kiwi in their enviroment....I had good expectations but I never expected how good it was... More

This is a must do if you are in the area. You need to book and they only go out on dry night. Both guides are very good at finding the elusive Rowi- we saw 3 with Ian in the bush. All under the starry Milky Way. Be prepared for a good walk (we walked 5k over the night according... More

Kiwis are birds unique to New Zealand and are represented currently by five species. Okarito Kiwi is the trickiest of the five to see, partly because they live in thick bush and partly because they are so rare. To see them requires either luck, a lot of time or a specialist company. There is no better outfit to see this... More

Had an amazing tour with Ian and a small group of other travelers! The night was one of my highlights from my 4 month trip to NZ and getting to learn about and then see a kiwi in the wild, instead of at a zoo or sanctuary was something very special. Even got to see a kiwi bird call out... More

Just finished a private tour with Ian Cooper, the Okarito brown kiwi expert. After 2 hours of quietly listening throughout the pitch black rain forest, we saw, Fancy, one of the 3 males that Ian has been observing for the last 18 years. It came right next to us! Ian was awesome - insanely funny and knowledgable. He went out... More

My wife and I kind of stumbled upon this tour, and it turned out to be one of the most amazing things we have ever done. Ian gave an INCREDIBLE tour, and we got to see a wild Kiwi! It really was an unforgettable experience. Ian is a great guy with a great sense of humor and really knows his... More

Ian is a fun character who will go to great lengths to ensure everyone on the tour gets a chance to spot a Kiwi. After a suspensful 2.5 hours, we eventually spotted our first Kiwi and then had repeated sightings over the next hour. Rug up in your best polar fleece and don't forget to wear a beanie!

We did a tour with Ian in January. His passion and knowledge about these birds is incredible! He is very cautious on getting close to the kiwis without disturbing them (he only takes small groups so that they don't make noise and scare the birds) and the whole experience feels very original. We were lucky enough to spot two kiwis... More

Me and my partner joined ian on a tour and it was incredible. Ians passion, enthusiasm and dedication to these birds and their conservation really completes the trip and is great to see. We had the luxury of seeing two kiwi multiple times throughout the tour, hearing multiple calls and crunching in the bush aswell as other calls such as... More
