Volcanic cone completely covered with vegetation except for mining extractions with a cutoff that allows to see the internal structure of the volcano. The impact of mining operations led to social mobilizations (1975) and the subsequent protection of the volcanic area (1982). The restoration of the grasslands won the FAD Award for decorative arts design in 1995.

We were going to do it on foot to reach the volcano but we were told that it was worth taking the tourist train that takes you through the nature park and takes you to the volcano. The tour is very good and we saw the volcano from afar with the cutoff that has in its central part. We are left in doubt if there is another part of the volcano where something else is appreciated and something better worthwhile. We had seen some totally different photos than what we actually enjoyed. At the end of the trip we asked in information if we would have seen anything else. They told us no. Here are totally different photos and it was what we expected to see. It's like that or we've been teased...

can walk to this from Can Xel restaurant car park or the national park parking area called Santa Margarida. Information centre and view into the centre of the newest old volcano in the Park.

We parked at "Area de Can Serra" which is the first car park and information centre after Can Blanc. Taking the route Nr 1 we walked through the cool forest and surrounded later the volcano CROSCAT. Very early you can see the cut in the flank of the volcano, but you are not allowed to come closer. So you have to walk another 10 minutes until a heavily used tourist path leads into the allowed zone and to the interesting cut in the volcano. Information and maps are available at an information booth.
The best is to combine CROSCAT with SANTA MARGARIDA and then walk back via track 1 and 2 to the car park (in total at least 4 hours). If you want to save time you better park the car at the car parks close to both volcanos and return always to the car parks before doing the next volcano.

One of the many volcanoes in the area, all of them unique and beautiful. All the walk from one to the other is amazing, there are so many fantastic views all the way, and the forest is rich and vibrating in calmness.

There are several of these old lava outflows in the area all well dead and little more then tree covered lumps in the flat landscape, so do not expect to see boiling flowing rock. Good vantage point after a scramble up a well used path to the top. Croscat is interesting as part of it has been quarried out so the lava rock formation can be easily seen.

The hike was easy- even in 35 degrees C. The signs were clear and the estimated time was correct- however, as we had been recommended this volcano in Olot as “the most interesting one” we were quite disappointed when we realised the mining cite was all there was to see... possibly we are spoilt being used to Norwegian nature, but this was not very interesting or spectacular

After reading the reviews we decided to take the hike to the volcanic site Croscat. It’s pretty cool to see the volcanic layers and also quite a nice stroll along the way to get there. We put Croscat volcano in our sat nav and it took us to a parking side road, we parked at the main site which was on the way. It’s clearly signposted and has a picnic stop and info office there to help guide you. There’s some kind of bus that takes you somewhere as well for those who can’t walk so far perhaps. The car park is pay and display you pay when you leave we stayed about 2 hrs and paid €4.90.
We did route 1 then 15 to the Croscat site it’s about 50 mins each way depending on stops etc. The round trip took us about 2hrs total. It’s about 3km each way. There is a mix of wooded shaded area, then a gravel path and then some steps when your closer to the base.
Worth a trip we saw families with kids and hikers with poles and cyclists on the route.
There is a water pipe at the info office near the Croscat base which was cold and very helpful to refill our water bottle.
The whole hike circular would take about 4.5hrs we were told and is 11km. We didn’t have enough time for that.
Enjoy!

A must-stop if you are a naturalist or geology nerd. Along the bike trail through the area. Sorry we missed the opportunity to hike to the top.

If you take the tiny direct path up, you will be very happy. It is protected by the trees and not too steep, about 25-30 minutes ascent. At the top you get a wonderful view.
