A lovely beach with black sand, also a surfers beach, quite a walk down from the car park but very pretty.

Firstly, the negatives: No shade down at the beach. The walk from the carpark to the beach is quite long and steep. Not much fun when you have two toddlers and a stoller with you. The positives: Lovely scenery, beautiful clean black sand. Toilets, outdoor showers, and changing rooms in the carpark as well as down at the beach. Lots... More

This beach is beautiful- long and wide at the foot of the cliffs. There are restrooms and changing rooms. If the waves are daunting at Manu Bay and Whale Bay give it a try. Approach from the boat launch for an easy in. But it's a long hard paddle out unless your content in the white water.

We visited this beach every day sans hired a board for my 11 year old daughter who is learning to surf. Perfect little beginner waves. Good waves out back too for my son who can surf. Nice beach although no cafe or shop so make sure you bring water, food etc

Great beach for swimming and surfing. During summer months you can rent boards and wet suits. Raglan surf does lessons here as well. Has ample parking, changing rooms and toilets.

This beach is perfect for beginner surfers, the waves are plentiful and just the right size. The beach is patrolled by surf life guards and there's a surfboard/boogie board rent shack. There's plenty of changing rooms and showering stations as well as drinking taps. Not to mention the absolutely beautiful views from the top.

The beauty of this expansive beach can be viewed from a couple of well maintained viewing platforms around the carpark. Walk down the access way to explore this surfing paradise. Take a dip or a surfing lession.

Great black sand beach. Clean. Can be quite busy but great if you're into watersports. Very steep slope to go down to get to the beach, which on a hot day especially, can be tiring to walk back up when you're leaving or if you suddenly realise you've forgotten your suncream in the car.

We read how beautiful this beach and used the Trip Advisor map and directions to get there. Those directions took us to the very beginning ( north) part of the beach- which was ok but not fabulous. Luckily we decided to explore further and found the gorgeous part of the beach. Keep going down Wainui Rd until you see the... More

We visited the beach on a sunny afternoon, which was absolutely worth it. The water is a little bit cold in March, but that's neither surprising nor off-putting. From what we could tell there were quite a few sandflies around, so be prepared for that.
