Mountain school took us to a cave. Everything was amazing. The weather was sunny outside, and the cave wasn't too windy, so we were able to enter without difficulty. You just must visit the location since what you can see cannot be described in words.

The cave of Vjetrenica is quite spectacular. Inhabited some 10.000 years ago by humans it still offers a spectacular halls. They even have a special blind albino salamander which only lives in caves like this. With temperatures always around 12 degrees. It is nice in winter as well as summer

The cave is nice and interesting, but the tour wasn't a fun experience. The team at the office (where you buy the tickets), and later the briefing before entering the cave was done in a very impolite way. The tour inside the cave was relatively short. The guide talked in an auto-mode with English that was sometimes hard to understand, and it all felt like they were not really interested in the visitors and their experience, but just wanted to be done with it as quickly as possible. With only a better service attitude of the team operating the cave, this could have been a much nicer experience.

Look, if you want to see some thing unique across the boarder from Croatia, take a day and go see this cave where a steady 11 C wind blows into the ridiculously hot summer air year round. More likely than not you will be in a very small group or alone, and you will cool off in the breezy climate, see a moderate formed cave but catch a glimpse of an olm, Aka a "human fish" which will amaze both nature lovers and kids. However if you are on the beach to party, maybe just stay in Croatia, this might not be your thing. Hercegovina is more for the adventurous, independent explorer type who likes food and wine and wants to see and experience something new and different.
This attraction is also at the edge of Popovo Ploje, which is the centre of many excellent but undiscovered Bosnian wineries are locates. Just follow the "Vina cesta" signs in either direction. Maybe take a knowledgeable local driver if you really want to explore the wine route... You know how it can go
Hint to all- tours only run on the hour, so wait in the nearby restaurant with great chevapai if you are hungry, but go wait in the breeze beside the cave entrench if you want to stay cool. If you have small kids, also bring sweaters and pants because the cold temperatures and cave winds can be a bit much for small kids in bathing suits and t-shirts.

I was not impressed with these caves sadly. I have visited many sets of caves and these were not exciting compared to others. However, the main problem was the path which was lethal to anyone who does not have perfect balance. It was poured concrete on the top of rocks which creates a seriously slippery path. They said there was nothing they could do about it but i have been to many other caves and have never had this situation before. There are all sorts of things they could do to make it less slippy such as putting down non slip mats which would not be that difficult. Personally I would skip this and go straight to the nearby monastery which is wonderful.

My husband and I visited the Vjetrenica caves on Wednesday 29th March 2017, we went for the day from Dubrovnik. We arranged the visit by emailing Vjetrenica Caves direct. They gave us a number of a local taxi who came to our hotel in Dubrovnik (much much cheaper than booking through the hotel) and drove us along the Dalmatian coast - what stunning views. We then drove inland through the mountains and across the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina (passport needed). We came to the village of Ravno and then a few mins later we arrived at the caves and was greeted by Helena our guide. We felt extremely privileged because we were the only ones visiting the caves that afternoon. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the elusive Proteus, a strange white salamander with arms and legs, they can live in the darkness for hundreds of years and go without food for 10years. The caves were very interesting but we didn't see the lake as we were too early in the season! . We were kitted out with hard hats Helena had a torch although the caves were well lit. The location around the caves is very different, mountainous but Ravno is situated slightly above a vast plain Popovo Polje where the eye can see for miles, there once was a railway that carried passenger from Vienna to Dubrovnik, sadly the railway is disused but it makes a fantastic cycling route. The former train station at Ravno has been converted into a boutique hotel Stanica Ravno hotel, restaurant and wine bar, we were shown around by Yasna who spoke very good English and was extremely knowledgeable and welcoming, the hotel is stunning, spotlessly clean and the restoration work is perfect. We would have checked in but we had to get back to Dubrovnik. Yasna said it would cost 50 euro per night for 2 people including breakfast. We were shown the wine cellar and the hams that were curring in the dry cupboards. We stopped for a glass of the local wine which was delicious. Although Ravno is off the beaten track it would make a very different kind of vacation, i would consider returning for a cycling adventure, you can hire bikes from the hotel. This region has suffered considerably during the 1990's conflict but you must admire the people for their efforts to put the past behind them and move forward. After our stop off at Ravno our taxi took us back along the stunning coastline and to Dubrovnik. It was an extremely memorable day and one a shall cherish. Thank you Yasna, Bozo and Helena.

This is maybe not the most interesting show cave I have ever been it, but it has it's charms. You are kitted out with a waterproof jacket and a hard hat to start with as parts of the cave are damp and low. If you have a torch bring it, it's not vital as the cave is lit but it will help.
So the two most interesting things are the breeze that blows from the mouth of the cave which is caused by a variation in air pressure from the entrance and the caves final point and the fact that a number of small species live in the cave like the colourless salamander the guide will try to show you at the end. I have only ever seen one other which was at Postojna in Slovenia. They say that they can live for 100 years.
If you are after big intricate displays of stalactites and stalagmites then you wont really see much of that like. There are some but they are modest, possibly the best display of minerals is a giant chunk of calcite deposit that glitters in the dark.
Finally, and I cannot stress this enough, it can be quite slippery, wear good shoes and take your time. There are railings and I heartily recommend you use them throughout, but be careful and you'll be okay.

Cave Vjetrenica is in Bosnia and Hercegovina, not in Croatia, but very close tothe border with Croatia. From Dubrovnik, if you going with car, it's maybe one and a half hour of driving. It is a very interesting place to visit. I was there in October 14 and that's a good idea to visit, specially in summer because inside of cave it's very cold. There is a good restaurant close to the cave. You have to cross the border (if you coming from Croatia) so don't forget passport or ID. You can pay in euro, kuna or Bosnian mark.

I didn't know about kuna, but I will add that we paid in Bosnian marks, but they also took euros, in case any one ever wonders about that.

Suitable for kids or not? Our five range from 11 to 1½. We've visited other caves (Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Czech Republic), and the kids tend to enjoy them, but I have heard that this one is slippery and there aren't handrails. Anyone with a good, detailed description?
Written 24 May 2017
There are handrails, it is pretty flat, and well lite. Kids should enjoy it very much. Just like every cave, it is cold, so dress properly and enjoy.
