Beautiful place and a must visit place in Namsai. Peaceful and calm with some awesome architecture. We have visited during the afternoon but could not stay till evening as it was raining heavily. Not much food options available nearby. Sufficient car parking spaces are avaiable at a nominal charge.

We visited Namsai from Jorhat, close to 5 hours of tough journey. But the result was fruitful. The Golden Pagoda is a majestic piece of architecture, and looks absolutely splendid. The area is huge and one can spend good amount of time in the premises. Very beautifully maintained. There was not much food options available around and outside the pagoda, except for some light snacks and ice cream.

We came to know of the Golden Pagoda while planning and researching for our trip to Arunachal Pradesh in Dec2014 and added it to our itinerary. Known as ‘Poi Lu Kongmu Kham’ in the local Tai-Khampti dialect, The Golden Pagoda at Tengapani (Dt. Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh) is one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in North East India. It is also a center for cultural research of the Tai Khampti and Singpho tribes who inhabit this part of the country and practice Theravada Buddhism.

The pagoda houses a beautiful gilded statue of Buddha (modelled on the Kala Buddha from the Nalanda archives) which was donated from Thailand in 1995. The site for housing the 5 feet high statue was identified in 2004 on land donated by the Arunachal Pradesh state government and the pagoda was built over the next 6 years by over 300 skilled masons and craftsmen under the supervision of experts from Myanmar.

The Golden Pagoda was consecrated on 22Feb2010 in the presence of more than 200 monks from all over the country and those from Bangladesh, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Thousands of devotees, traditional religious dancing troupes from Myanmar and the Thai ambassador to India also participated in the inaugural ceremonies.

The sprawling complex behind the pagoda houses monasteries, administrative offices and guesthouses for travellers and devotees. We spent a night at the guesthouse complex during our visit. The guesthouse complex has suites and rooms where pilgrims and travelers may stay. We were allocated and enjoyed ‘VIP’ suites, housed in individual, stand-alone concrete ‘cottages’. The cottages, rooms and dormitories are built around a manicured central garden behind the pagoda.

Our suite had a covered sit-out, a sitting room with sofas and a large air-conditioned living room with an attached grilled-in verandah. The living room was well-furnished in lines of an executive hotel room with study tables, a dresser, cupboards, double beds with multiple blankets and intercom. The room came with a flat-screen TV with a TataSky DTH connection along with a small refrigerator. The two large attached bathrooms had western toilets, modern bath fittings & fixtures and electric geysers providing hot water at all times. Bed and bath linen were spotlessly clean and the entire facility was calm, well-maintained and spic & span. We were pleasantly surprised by the presence of this economically-priced spanking modern lodging facility in such a remote location.

We appreciate the commitment and thoughtfulness of all patrons of the pagoda and monastery.

We were delayed in reaching Tengapani as our vehicle malfunctioned near Parashuram Kund and could reach the guesthouse only around midnight. We had been in touch with the Facility Manager Mr. Sukanta since the evening over mobile phone, and he and his staff were awake and waiting to greet us when we arrived. We were served warm dinner as per our order, even at that late hour ! The food served at the restaurant in the complex was simple and freshly cooked travellers’ fare.

I strongly recommend a visit and if possible a stay, at the Golden Pagoda if you are travelling through the Namsai / Lohit districts, enroute to Parashuram Kund and beyond.

The Kongmukham pagoda or better known as the Golden Pagoda of Namsai is a place which bestows peace and divinity to the entire surrounding and in any person who visits this holy place. Situated on a little hill overlooking a gurgling stream of water and vast fields of paddy, this beautiful and picturesque pagoda is a place to visit. I have been there more than 10 times in 4 years and would go there for more. It is a place to escape to for inner peace and tranquility. The pagoda is very beautifully made with gold coloured plating and carvings inspired by the Thai culture. The pagoda has a lovely beautiful garden around it with lots of flowering plants which make it a colourful heaven. The pagoda is at peace all throughout the day and one can just sit and meditate to lose oneself from the worldly matters. If you are lucky, you may get a chance to sit through the morning prayers or evening chants of the Buddhist monks and their little disciples which is soothing and heart warming. There is a new resort that has come up just next to the Pagoda which is a good place to spend the night. Also the pagoda is surrounded by thick forest which gives a nature lover a chance to see a lot of birds and if one is lucky he can see animals like gibbons and giant malayan squirrel. And not to forget, on a cold winter morning when the skies are clear, one can enjoy a majestic view of the snow clad Himalayas of Eastern Arunachal.
I can write pages for this place as it has been my one of the most favourite places to visit. But that for some other time. Do visit and do lose yourself in the holiness of this place.

The Golden Pagoda is located at Tengapani (also known as Chongkham), in the Namsai District of Arunachal Pradesh, in North East India. The Golden Pagoda is known to the local Tai-Khamti tribal people as ‘Khongmu-kham’.

The Golden Pagoda is a temple complex situated on about 20 hectares of land and is built in a Burmese architectural design. The Pagoda, with four entrances was consecrated in February 2010 and has a large meditating Buddha statue inside it. This Buddha statue was donated by Ven Prakhu Pabhavana, the chief monk of the Wat Aranjikavas of Thailand. Each of the four entrances of the shrine is guarded by a pair of mythical lions. On four corners of the outer base of the main shrine are a bell, Vasundhara the goddess of wealth, a monk and four deities. A pond to the left of the entrance gate and a Ashoka pillar on the eastern side of the main shrine are some of the main features of the Golden Pagoda complex.

The Golden Pagoda complex also houses a meditation hall, a multipurpose hall, guest houses for travellers and devotees, a library, a monastery to accommodate around 100 Bhikkhus and living quarters for the monks.

The Pagoda complex is on National Highway 52, at Tengapani which is on the way to Parashuram Kund. Closest airport is Dibrugarh in Assam, which is 110 kms away.

Located in Arunachal Pradesh. Need to hire a taxi to reach there. The drive is long but beautiful. Don't expect any refueling station so get your vehicle refilled in advance. The place is remote but after reaching blows you out with its mesmerizing beauty.

We were on way to Parashuram Kund in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh from Tinsukia when we came to know that on the way is this beautiful Buddhist Pagoda in Namsai district. It was breathtakingly beautiful experience It has a huge compound, monastery and the temple. We wished that we could be there for more time. Looking forward to another visit sometime. Nearby is the river flowing and the whole surroundings are so beautiful.
In Namsai district Kamati Buddhists who came from Thailand live and this beautiful temple is made by them.
